    I need some advice..

This is not a typical modern RPG as I have come to realise. I can pretty much go anywhere I like, similar to MMO's, but its difficult to tell whether you will have trouble succeeding your mission just by looking at who you are facing. Ok, obviously i'm not ready for BoS.

Lastnight, I found my way into a casino and talked to Gizmo, we ended up in a fight, which myself, dogmeat and Ian won. But somehow, I don't think I was supposed to do that just yet, I keep getting the feeling I have done things too early.

The other problem I have is my action points, I want to be able to fire my guns twice in one turn, not once, because between myself, dogmeat and Ian, I am the worst killer, even though I have the better guns. So how the hell do I get my action points up? Does my weight cause my AP to drop? It looks like the last 2 AP lights are turned off, is that normal? (I am currently at level 7). Lastly, I don't know what the hell I am supposed to do, I have been almost everywhere, but there does not seem to be a lot for me to do, especially at my current level, almost everywhere I go, I am just too weak to take on the the mission. The one thing I am trying to do now is get a caravan job (I want to find the missing caravans, so I figure if I take on a caravan job, I might find out the reason), but it doesn't work! I join one, he says come back on such a date, I do, but he acts as if I was never offered a job. So I just figure I am too low a level to do this mission!

Sigh, I think my character is completely screwed up, but I have hopes. Currently I have metal plate armor, quite a good few small weapons and 4000+ caps. So I don't think I am doing too badly.... am i?

      Another question.

I managed to get the water chip, but what surprised me was the difficulty (or ease) in getting it.

In order to get into the room where the waterchip is, I must pass through 3 of those super mutants, which are nearly impossible to kill at the level that I was (which was level 5), and even now that I am level 7, I still don't think I would be able to break through.

I only managed to get through with luck. I taunted them, made them chase me around the building outside, left the area, returned (which caused them to stop chasing me and stand where they were (which was outside the building on the far side), I snuck into the building and continued down to get the chip.

But to me, that doesn't seem to be the proper way to do it, I should have been able to kill them all. But how the hell am I supposed to do that at such a low level and with so few days left!?

I can't remember if it was possible to create a poor character in Fallout, you could in Daggerfall(make it weak and level really slowly etc), and I think you could do the same in fallout due to all the options in char creation.

Anyway I always went for the 'mad max tough' kinda char as that, to me, fit in perfectly with the setting. Low strength + carrying lots of heavy stuff can(I think, hope I'm not confusing it with some other game) affect your action points...............hmm maybe I'm thinking of Xcom?

As for the mutants - I never did often kill them all either, if there was more than one around, they are just too tough even when you get nice weapons like the plasma. Unless you are very accurate with one of the elite weapons, I think they will always be a handfull.

So your tactic, while a new one for me(I didn't know they would remain in spot if you leave the area and come back! cool ) is kinda what I would often do - avoid/sneak about/run away. Big mutants are nasty.

Did you explore all the early area's very thoroughly? I spent along time in those bits and was always just about tough enough/high enough level to deal with most of what came my way(bar a few super mutant types all at once).

I did end up sneaking a peak at a FAQ from time to time. I think just because the time limit was always on my mind?

If I recall correctly, Fallout allowed plenty of character customization, but not all of the perks, skills, and traits were worth getting. If you want to beat the game optimally, you pretty much have to go the Diplo-Sniper route - a high agility for extra APs, a high intelligence for all the conversation choices, and as much skill in long-range weapons as possible, to allow you to kill the enemy while they're still far away.

There are anti-walkthroughs for completing the game with low intelligence, but most of them focus on taking Mentats ahead of key conversations to progress along key quests.

It looks a like an excellent game. Hard to believe there were (are?) people up in arms about it being first-person.

I am concerned that, this being Bethesda, the enemies will be terribly dumb. Bandits with the fanaticism of samurai, anyone? At the very least, old tactics like circle-strafe and run 'n' snipe should be weakened.

I can't quite remember, but I don't think you could really strafe that well in Oblivion, let alone circle-strafe.

My gutt feeling(s) for Fallout 3:

+ People from NMA will hate it.
+ People who really loved the original two Fallouts will consider F3 "dumbed down" and/or "lacking of the spirit {or other generalized, non-specific non-existing thing} from the first two"
+ Your average mainstream gamer, who never heard of Fallout since it was a 2D RPG from a company that died out, will really like it
+ The game will be a success for Bethesda
+ The above two points will really piss off the first two groups. Like people from TTLG.com hating Bioshock, they will be upset that the series is not only what it once was, but that only they are upset by it.
                  It's a CB.

Yeah, but then again the people from TTLG.com pretty much hate everything.

And you are about spot on with that gut feeling. Add me in as:

+people who didn't like what Oblivion did to the elderscrolls probably won't like this 'remake' either.

But yeah it will be a huge commercial success, the console kids(sounds derogatory, but take it very literal) will wet there pants over it i'm sure, which is fine. Good for Bethesda(and shareholders).

                      Edit:
I sound so bitter - I should be one of those nma/ttlg thingies. truth is this game isn't even on my radar anymore, so I don't really care - I know it won't be a game for me to enjoy so I've forgotten about it already.

                      • I like Fallout old style RPGs and will probably also like Fallout 3, despite the fact I suspect it will be streamlined.

I guess some people are just more flexible and like good games, without trying to label them.

                          • Am I the only one who doesn't love the fixed isometry of the old Fallout? I've been playing 2 again in preparation, and I'm constantly annoyed by having to hunt for little pixels instead of zooming, or trying to find corpses concealed in corners or behind tables without rotating. I like the overall viewpoint the isometric view gives you, but I think a lot of the love for it is just nostalgia. After all, if Fallout 3 kept the old engine but crapped out on everything else, it wouldn't be a point in its favor.

Does anybody think that Bioshock would have been more immersive if you were navigating Rapture in an isometric mode?
                            John Brown did nothing wrong.

                              Starcraft
                              AoE

nothing wrong with isometric done well. I don't mind it in Fallout either, even if you get the hunt the pixel syndrome from time to time.

What I really hate is awful camera controls, or controls that get in the way of gaming, you know your trying to see a certain building from a certain angle but each time the mouse moves 1mm it starts to swing that perspective around. I hate fighting with drifting camera angles, it's worse than being drunk

ermm so yes....i think.....or maybe no?

                              • I like pixel hunting! Maybe i'm just unique in that area? It was a great practice in the old adventure games.

Btw, has anyone actually seen the awesome new video's recently? The ones that have changed my mind completely that this game may actually be quite ****ing good?
