  • Retro is pretty cool. Just look at Apolyton...

    ...fair point
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

    • I just read somewhere you can use the Wiimote with a PC. How does that work? Maybe the WiiPC combo is viable?

I think thats the first time Ive seen an argument for the 360 based on cultural elitism.

Foreign films, estate bottled wines, atonal music, difficult literature, and Halo.

You have to admit the "simplicity" of Wii games isn't particularly appealing for most gamers who are craving more.

The other consoles offer simplicity in the Arcade/PSN games, then depth in the regular games...the Wii is a cultural phenomenon, but a shallow one-trick pony.

Ive seen cultural snob arguments for grognard games, for TBS games, even for PC games in general, and usually its the console gamers, including the 360 gamers, leading the charge for the idea that games are fun, and if someone wants to relax at the end of the day by shooting space marines instead of poring over a spreadsheet or learning Brian Reynolds philosophy of life or dealing with a 98% accurate simulation of a civil war battle, thats fine and one form of entertainment is not superior to the other. It seems that the "more" that consoles offer is important to you. Just as the more that certain genre of PC games offer is important to others of us. All well and good. But implying that people who want one form of entertainment or another are necessarily childish or simple minded is silly.

You can play viva pinata on the 360 and then play assasins creed. Fine. Someone else can play Wii Sports, and then read the James Joyce.

I wont speak to exactly how complex Wii or 360 games are or arent, as Ive barely played any of them. I just find it odd after years of console fans and shooter fans in general ranting against PC elitism, against genre elitism, etc, to hear some HD console fan ranting about the intellectual superiority of HD console owners. Its like, surreal, man (apologies to Andre Breton)

            • I think you're barking up the wrong tree here, obviously no one here really *****es about PC game elitism. In fact, I find most PC gamers to be pretty retarded.

I can't recall asking you a question on who is or isn't retarded.

                      • There is a fair point here in that a lot of us get frustrated when people like Snoopy post incoherent arguments as to why PC gaming is unambiguously superior to console gaming, but we are of course here to put the counterarguments.

There are also those here biased against the Wii within the console sphere, but in contrast the key Wii demographics aren't here to tell those people how blinkered they are.

Basically Asher, you are Snoopy, with equal bias and slightly more coherent arguments.

Yeah, its pretty tired at this point, but unfortunately, this won't be the last of these live-journal type posts. I'm not sure what the point of most of the post was- after all, if the big publishers aren't changing their game making strategies, as he argued, then the wii and its marketshare/sales should be utterly irrelevant to him, which he could state in less than 25 words and get his point across. Personally, I don't spend time typing up 500 word essays on things that are irrelevant to me, ie soccer or nascar. Videogames: serious business.

I think it's pretty clear that most games on the Wii are not good - but how many good games do people need to shell out £180 for the console?
7-10 games is the threshold for me. I'm waiting on ff13 for a ps3, I figure by then there will be 10 games I want (all multiplat I can get for the 360), hopefully at a better price. It would be nice to have a second blu ray player in my apt. Right now it stands at Uncharted, MGS4 and perhaps resistance, needs more (any) jrpgs desperately.

I like the N franchises, so basically I can figure in a starting point of 5 games that I want for any Nintendo console. Then its just a matter of a few new games (like Wii Sports) or promise of new games/port ups (in the case of Re4: Wii) to push it over the edge for me to want.

360 didn't have sufficient games for the first year to justify the $400 price tag. Now, there are plenty of games in most genres that I enjoy. for those genre's lacking, I have a wii and ds, and vice versa.

So your planning all 3, ultimately?

                              I'll get a Wii soon I expect, but don't see myself getting a PS3.
