    • I'm saying that relationships are full of compromises.

and not long after the "wii doesnt mean anything to HD gaming, why should I care" essay

Id say there are several stages of platform/genre grief for someone who values a particular type of game on a particular type of platform.

First is denial - this doesnt matter, the folks who play MY kinds of games will never go to THAT platform, why should I care?

Second - panic - What if my platform enters a death spiral - loss of retail shelf space, loss of installed base, loss of developer attention, loss of mindshare, and ends up as a niche with games played by nostalgic middle aged guys, whove bought their games from mail order catalogs they pass around, on machines they hold together with spit and duct tape?

third - acceptance. My platform is surviving, there are still games being made for it, it wont go away, even if it will never be as prominent as it was.

Id say PC strategy gamers have pretty much all made it to the third stage. the 360 (or more generically hardcore console) shooter "ecosystem" remains alot healthier than the PC strat ecosystem, I say they have far less excuse for struggling with denial and panic than we do.

                    • As expected, the Wii is selling like crazy but people are playing other consoles way more...

                      • Kinda odd age 'groups' there.

'10-26' is hardly the same demographic when it comes to games. I'ld like to see 10-14, 14-18, etc.

Also have a question that you might actually know off hand and I don't care enough to look it up.

My Mother in Law's Wii broke. It's been lightly used, and is not a year old yet. She got the box and took it to the UPS store, and they told her they see at least one a week coming in for return. Hadn't heard of many problems with them in the news myself, is it just the ups guy talking crap or is there an issue with the Wii?

                        • I'm surprised by the Wii's length of session - I'd think it would be much shorter. I wonder what the survey methodology was (and survey population/demographics).

                          • wait 28 days a month, over 2 sessions a day at over 2 hours a session.

IE the Under 26 YO 360 players have very little leisure activity other than gaming?

As for the Wii numbers, that sure seems pretty hardcore to me. even for the older group. 12 days month, almost 2 sessions a day, and over 45 minutes a session. Certainly not "collecting dust" by any means.

                            • The thing that jumps out most is the stark difference in the percentage of console time made up by the Xbox for the two age ranges.

Just speaking anecdotally I know a lot more people of my age (27+) with a 360 than a PS3.

The "% of console time" numbers in the last category are switched, apparently. 360's is PS3 number and vice versa. No one knows what that category really means though...the only useful column is the last.
