        Well, putting characters in a Smash Bros. game opens up the market for those characters' original games. Just look at Fire Emblem -- it was never released in the US, until Marth and Roy appeared in SSBM and became universally beloved. Now it's a popular franchise in the US, all thanks to Smash Bros.

        Metal Gear was already somewhat popular over here, and Hideo Kojima has been begging for Snake's inclusion since before SSBM, when production was already too far along for his inclusion. Masahiro Sakurai relented this time around.

        Think about the impact that just two new third-party characters (Snake and Sonic) is already having on the market for SSBB.
