  • Grandpa Troll's Blue Collar Review of COMMANDER: EUROPE AT WAR

    Greetings fellow gamers!

I am Apolytons's own Blue Collar Reviewer, I am going to address some games not primarily covered by our Meat & Potatoes Platter, but rather some other games of interest to yours truly!

With that, a personal thanks to Slip Oz who turned me onto this gem from Matrix Games.

I will start by saying I was at first hesitant to purchse a game online from an unkown source, but was very pleased that all went well.

I have a Vista OS and this caused the first "Glitch", causing a slight bit of anxiety but soon after s little research, found by "Right-Clicking" and choosing Run as Administrator as works most excellent.

I did the very easy product update and went to the unknown world of playing my first ever game!

The look is in Hexes and the units are 2 Dimensional, not 3 Dimensional, which is ok, because this is more strategy than control over an individual battle with each man.

The interface is very user friendly!

I choose the Axis powers and immediatly you have multiple options for gameplay such as:

    1) What year to start in (1939 or later) as well as the ending year (by unchecking a box, you could go past 1945)

    2) Fog of War on or off

    3) Oil consumption can be checked or unchecked.

This one was a complex decision, because as one who enjoys history and a movie buff, Scenes from Battle of The Bulge appeared when the German Tank Commander Hessler had to secure the fuel depot in order to run his tanks in battle. I chose oil consumption and let me tell you, put on Tanks for a Lightning war or Blitzkreig and you will soon find out why it is important to balance your forces. The same with the necessity of an Air Corp or for me the Luftwaffe!

Ok, so I started a game and am swarmed with decision making opportunities.

A few this old Gramps had to deal with were:

A)Research. The old saying dont work harder, work smarter! really sinks in, youneed some combat troops but also you need to invest in some technological innovation that awaits you.

    B) I want to stop the Allied Supply lines across the seas so I need the vaunted Wolfpack or Submarine attack squadrons. But a point of problem starts with you really should have 6 Subs (or actual groups) attacking at once. The game gives you two at startup, which I highly reccomend sending to due North near Murmansk untill your desired level is met. 2 subs wont take out a convoy and you will only draw the ire and attention of the British Royal Navy. Now, the problem that you face are only one port at Wilhelmshaven so production will be a bit slow.

    C) Who should I attack first as we in the fatherland need to take territories and occupy them. It helps to remember some History as some nations will join you later in war. Poland will be the first to fall, next installmant will be how this transpired

This shows the vision your Submarine has, situated here, you would be deadmeat against the British Naval forces

Naturally you make your own decisions, but having played this game a short time, I can assure you should you choose to go to a Naval Battle, you better not be planning a ground game, because this will take the bulk of your naval Forces to compete.

Risk vs Reward, does not seem worth it, IMHO.

This is what your opening in game screen offers, as the Axis, you faced with over running Poland in 1939!

Starting out, Danzig is unprotected, simply move in and occupy!

Here we have the German Motorized Corp attacking Polish ground troops.

Here you see the damage after the attack, from a full strengtrh 10 to a more ineffective 7, causing the defending Polish Troops to withdraw one tile

Panzer Tanks finish these very brave troops.

You will also notice as you pick up pressure, Poland will actually collapse and fall to protect its capitol of Warsaw.

Next we attack Poland in south and overrun Krackow

This is a better screenshot of opening screen, here it shows options.

I chose Oil Consumption and random research, although I will focus as i see necessary as detailed on below screens:

Research screens with a large amount of possible options, all necessary, depending on your specific mode of attack, would deem which is most pressing.

I chose some research toward Industry as well as Air power, because you will need any advantage on airpower first in defense against England when you begin your attack and eventual occupation of France. Later, when you need bombing runs against the Motherland of Russia, this will help soften up an extremely wide swath you will be up against

How does this compare to the HoI series?

Nikolai, I have not played any such a game as this before in my life.

But, due to reading such threads as HOI, Vicky?, and the mention of Panzer Commander style games, i followed Slip_Oz's advice and acquired this.

I am very new but learning as I go.

I have watch people do reviews and by far many people do a beter review than i can compile, however, not everyone, including me, are so called "experts" so this kind of prompted me as I go along to review and post observations that may turn someone else onto this game!

Matrix games has a large variety of games, which i will check into and perhaps one day purchase

Enjoy my Brother, lots more to come as time permits!

Yep, you called it right so far Gramps.

One thing to mention though - this game does not have an "undo" option so once you move a unit it better be right because you don't get a second chance w/o reloading.

As for Matrix - if you remember the old days of Avalon Hill type board wargames then Matrix seem to have a considerable number of games in this sort of style. I guess it is easier for the smaller game developers and publishers to do this sort of thing than the all singing all dancing graphics fest that is most mainstream games.

Is there any variants for diplomacy? Does it follow historical patterns i.e Italy, Rumania etc join the Axis or is there some randomness? What about countries like Spain or Turkey?

Correct, on the issue of "undo" I had actually made a few errors and just lived with them.

I am actually doing a review as i go, from what I am/have learned.

I will say I tried attacking Hungary but was unable to, I would imagine due to us being Allies a bit down the road.

One point to bring up which runs parallel with this diplomacy issue is the necessity to keep focused on Italy getting troops into North Africa area!

I usually try to send a few aircraft via continent/Island hopping and then as for Tanks/Motorized Infantry or whatever, simply send those units to a dock with a ship in them (it matters not what kind and on bottom of screen on left side you will see a load/unload button in bold color, simply load it and you have an instant convoy piece and then send where you need it, but beware of enemy craft, they will sink them!

I have tried attacking/assaulting with Fighter Planes/Tanks and Motorized Infantry, no good at all!

What was successful is around 8 or so Tactical Bombers hitting one Fortified position at a time, it breaks them down and you can move on through.

Remember though, keep your fighter planes close to help defend against the British Royal Airforce

Ok, here we have an Italian Tank waiting to be loaded onto a ship, please note the green ICON on screen at bottom below Tank, simply click that and it will become an ocean going vessel

\And this shows how easy it is and what it looks like

                            June 1940 Italy joins Axis

Later in the Month of October Hungary and Romania join the Tripartite Pact

                            France surrenders to Germany

Now, I will send 80% of troops to prepare for Russia.

The key, IMHO, is Tactical/Strategic bombing

Remember, fighter Plames for France to combat British fighters
