LOTM: i find that settlers is generally superior to monopoly. i took it with me to my in-laws a few weeks ago, and they described it as a more mellow version of monopoly. it seems to be a far more well put-together in terms of design. most classic board games have bad rules; of which risk is probably the biggest offender.

for something different, you can try robo rally, which has planning elements and a little bit of combat as well. or if you want a more in-depth risk style game look for Shogun/Samurai Swords (i forget which name it goes by now). they're all fairly tight ruleswise.
I wasn't born with enough middle fingers.

Samurai Swords is great, but VERY time consuming. Hard to get together folks for a long enough stretch to really play it.

Sid Meier's Civ the Boardgame? By Eagle Games? God, that was awful. We played it once. I really should sell it or something; it's in great condition...

Theres an absolutely massive board games shop down near Potomac Mills Mall, if you ever make the trek.

Yeah, I liked Avalon Hill's game much much better.

I still had a good time... I am not sure if I would continue to have a good time if I played it a lot.

no more so than monopoly or risk, provided everyone knows the rules.

                          I think this is it

I dont remember exactly. QOTM and POTM were shopping at the mall, Id gone along for the ride but didnt want to hang out while clothes selected, so I dropped them at the mall, and went looking for interesting things, and found (I think) this place.

Good luck with that ... I hear sets go for over $80 on ebay of the second (best) edition (Mayfair)... I don't have the original, I only have the cludged together set that combines the "Basic" or whatever edition plus "More", the two that were still available in Mayfair editions without spending a lot...

                              Speaking of board games....

Does anyone know much about this "Heroscape" that my son (8) wants? Looks like some cross of DND, risk, and a CCG, but it's kinda hard to tell how it plays from the info on the packaging.
