wait a minute. HP, even discounted, sold for at least around $20 a copy. Not counting special editions.

    Something doesnt quite jive here.

Whats the source for total HP sales rev on the first day? Ive only been able to find data on volumes sold.

    • as an aside, Im willing to bet Harry Potter games do a helluva lot better than Halo books, for whatever thats worth.

Not to mention the films, which are worth a lot more.

      • well, it (the helmet) probably sold less, they sent massive packages to reviewers:

This is incredibly unethical. Since when did MS openly bribe journalists? If they gave some no name $800 for a good review, imagine what they gave to the big sites.

Im waiting for MS to give us a citation for HP sales revenue. I sure hope someone didnt simply multiply the 8.3 million sales by the $18 on-line price which gives you $150 million. At the price of $21, charged by the major bookstore chains , it would be $175 million. All of which excludes any special editions.

Unethical? It's standard practice. When "Lair" came out, Sony did the same thing including a now-famous "Reviewers Guide" that they sent out trying to explain specific ways to play the game to enjoy it.

When I used to review hardware, every review piece came with free swag (t-shirts, free games, and stock benchmark results!).

Why don't you go debate this with yourself in the OTF where it belongs. GAMES FORUM! Focus!

Microsoft chose to make the comparison, not me. As part of their hype about Halo3, which, I am told, is a game.

If you wish to discuss Halo 3, then do so.

If you wish to discuss Harry Potter, then do so elsewhere.

                  Simple.

Im discussing MS's press release about Halo 3, which you posted here. MS seems to think Harry Potter sales are worth noting to get a sense of how big a cultural phenom Halo3 is. Far be it from me to dispute them on that.

                      Last warning.

You are not discussing gaming, nor Halo.

If you wish to discuss economics and Harry Potter, do so elsewhere. Threadjacking is not welcome, nor tolerated.

                      8.3 million * $20 is still less than $170M.

LOL! ISTR quite a lot of discussions of the economics of the various consoles, from you.

And you were quite prepared to discuss HP, as long as the discussion supported the MS press release.

Anyway, when did you become a mod?

                        • I don't discuss HP, I made a passing reference to it as a cultural phenomenon.

You wish to do some in-depth analysis on the sales of Harry Potter books in a Halo 3 thread in Other Games.

                          Think!

Further, 8.3 mil copies @ $20 is still less than $170 so you're wrong to begin with.

If you have no interest in Halo, then I suggest you stop wasting everyone's time with your drivel about Harry frickin Potter.

Well, thanks for agreeing to discuss HP sales. Yes, its 166 million dollars, just below 170 million.

IF HP were sold for an average price of $20 a copy. Given that the online prices were less, the bricks and mortar prices were more (and most people bought it bricks and mortar) and that there was a deluxe edition on sale, IIUC, its not clear what the price was.

Id like to know MS's source. Surely SOMEONE knows. I checked Beyond 3d, and they hadnt even managed to come up with the HP first day sales yet.

Im interested in whether the suits at the MS games division were correct, or were sloppy, or were flat out dishonest.

They didnt mention it in passing - they put the factoid at the top of their press release.

This is because B3D is full of intelligent people who tend not to dwell on insignificant points of PR.
