apparently he was working as one of the ES reps on the port of AOK to DS, which probably left less time for coding.

he was apparently also the lead programmer on System Shock 2.

Hm.. seems like it's not better in every way imaginable.
Sounds to me like he's just upset that he's not getting the first-time cherry-popping rush. Nothing to do with it "not being better" (he says it's better in every way imaginable, word for word), just that it's not as mind-blowing as it was the first time. That kind of makes sense, doesn't it?

The AI is vastly different when it's not on normal. I guess you just don't know what the **** you're talking about...

"Mark Rosewater on Creativity: A link to an interesting paper on creativity by the designer behind Magic the Gathering was passed around this week by Rob Fermier. The paper discusses what creativity is and how one can become better at it. A creative person has the ability to generate and act upon new ideas with regularity. Creativity flows from seeing connections between things that others do not. Mark lists five
attributes in people that lead to creativity and then also a list of 10 things to do that will improve your creativity. He has obviously given this a lot of thought and the paper is well worth reading.
When I consider the design staff at ES I see a lot of the attributes in my colleagues. Our brainstorming sessions are very lively and productive. We recently had a thread going for coming up with ideas for games on an entirely new kind of platform. We quickly generated a lot of ideas that I would consider creative. The 10 things that Mark lists for improving creativity (play games, do puzzles, read talk to others, etc.) I see going on every day in our teams.
I have written before that I see our industry gradually establishing a foundation of learning and science upon which we are building the art of our craft. I see this paper as more bricks in that foundation. Check it out here.
              Uh. What the ****, LOTM.

Rob Fermier passed around a link to a Magic the Gathering paper. uh. Okay?

              Now, back in reality...

              • I am amazed the standard of innovation for FPS games is literally "nicer graphics than before, new weapons, and an AI that knows some tricks (although may or may not be wholly incompetent at using them)."

If the hype convinces you to drop $60 or more on that, your loss.

                • It's going to take a long time to get used to picking stuff up with the shoulder button, though. I've lost count of the number of times I've wasted a bubble shield

Just what do you expect, Wiggy? It's a first-person shooter. You point, you shoot -- from the first person perspective.

Give me an example of what they should have done to "innovate" in the single player game experience without alienating the 9+ million people who bought the last version.

From what I've read, the addition of the equipment feature was extremely solid.

Good for him. Demoted from Lead Programmer to Programmer.

Now can you take your Rob Fermier circle jerk elsewhere? I really don't care about him or that other site you love.

I'd actually prefer if you'd just go discuss games over there if it's so much better. You and Rob can discuss which Sims 2 Pet is hottest.

There's really no shame in just backing down when the other side is right...

Hmm, that does invalidate his opinion on all games, but the site can't really be held responsible unless they are aware of and therefore implicitly condone his crimes.
