Hey, I'll readily admit that I have lower expectations for graphics than many players. Unless something looks blatantly ugly (200x200 textures in an otherwise great-looking game), I'll probably be satisfied.

Still, Quake Wars is the Doom3 engine, and it sure does have better models than Doom3. So maybe the graphics are "three years ago", not five. As long as there are no pointy heads I'm happy though

Since when was Quake Wars the DOOM 3 engine? I thought it was the new megatexture engine, which is an experiment.

Isn't it a modified version of the Doom3 engine? I believe Quake Wars is just that, the Doom3 engine (properly called id Tech 4 now, apparently) with megatexture added to it, megatexture being an add-on tech, not an engine.

Interesting, if so. Considering megatexture is rather fundamental to rendering, and I don't see any of the DOOM 3 lighting engine in these awful screenshots.

I assume the QW maps have some static sources of light, unlike Doom3 maps, which were all about dynamic sources only.

Asher, QW is quite scalable, it can be played on computers with quite low specs. From the looks of that shot, it appears to be a low-end computer, either that or the settings are turned down.

This is what it looks like on my computer.

The intensity of the game is immense, like the first one, but far more interesting, thanks to the Strogg.

Solver, I'm not sure if you misunderstood me or not, but to me, we have not yet solved the graphics problem (making things realistic), you are just too easy to please. The thing is, we are within reach of photo-realistic gaming and once we reach that level, focus will be turned to game mechanics (which is a lot lot harder).

I'm not saying that all games will be photo-realistic in the future, I am simply saying that because it is the easiest to master, it will obviously be the first, and that is the stage we have been primarily stuck in for the past 10 years. It's just a matter of getting it done and out of the way for the more important stuff.

Snoop, you're not fooling me. That ain't an in-game screenshot.

**** Asher, will you please just try the game and see for yourself?

btw, that YouTube post is of the map "Island", located off the coast of Africa, a really cool map, my favourite so far, I am also starting to really like the Australian map.

And i'm surprised they even added New Zealand as one of their locations.

That was for Strogg, this one is for GDF.

                              No HUD? No gameplay angle?

Hey, even I can tell that games aren't photo-realistic yet But graphics appeal to the masses. I think developers will continue to emphasize graphics development as long as you can tell a computer game and a movie apart.

Still, I think graphics development has actually slowed down lately. 2007 games look better than 2004 games, yeah, but it's not such a huge difference. Look at, say, 2003 games vs. 2000 games - it's day and night, looks totally different. Things like physics and interactivity have been developing faster lately, IMO.

Game mechanics are always harder to create, so we'll have to live with games that do little with mechanics and focus on graphics/multiplayer/physics/whatever.
