You say open minded, I say naive. The Wii has established itself as a party game, nothing more. Its hardware sales are high, but no one is playing games on the thing.

I play them as well, of course. How else does one unlock achievements?

Well not to be mean but 5000 odd points from all those games is pretty poor.

Most of them didn't give points, as they were demos. I only own 15 Xbox 360 games, I think. Plus maybe 10 arcade.

Keep in mind I also do own 3 consoles and a high-end gaming PC. And I do work. I don't spend as much time as I'd like gaming, but I'm still very much a gamer.

            I make it 16 + 15 arcade.

            That's 16*1000 + 15*200 = 19000 points.

            5880/19000 = 31%

Mine is (almost - in your face!) equally bad though at 3525/9800 or 36%

Mine should shoot up quite a lot though over the next couple of weeks as I have a smattering of points in games I've just started, such as Bioshock, Dirt and Forza

Games jointly owned and current high scorer:

Bioshock - me, but meaningless as we've both just started

Forza2 - you, but also meaningless

              Hexic - me (owned!)

Castlevania, Symphony of the Night - me

              Gears - me

              Oblivion - you

              Geometry Wars - me

Call of Duty 2 - me

So that's 5-1 and one meaningless one either way. Yes I am a little bored.

Me too. Not to mention NHL and Halo.

a party gaming machine you say? But that makes the Wii appealing, since the PC satisfies my "serious" gaming needs. If we were ever to decide that electronic gaming was a worthwhile addition to socializing, the Wii would be appealing.

We were recently at a teen birthday party, POTM joined in playing guitar hero. I dont know which console they had (but it wasnt a Wii) they owned it purely for GH - they owned no other games (and AFAIK they didnt rent other games, either)

I think it may be underestimated here just how big the market is for console games that arent "really games" and not just on the Wii, but on the other machines as well.

Now even thats not to say "Wii" wins. 360 is fighting hard with various rhythm games (rockband?), IIUC, and may well crush Wii. I dunno. Its just to say that to ignore the party game segment of the market, and to assume that Wii focus on that part of the market makes it irrelevant to sales of other consoles, seems to me to be overstated.

The moment you have grandmas tripping over themselves to buy a Wii, and cruise ships implementing them on the ship, you should clue in that this is fundamentally a different market from the people who play Madden, Halo, etc. Which also explains why the Wii's sales for such games are utterly pathetic.

And software sales in general. How many grannys will rush out and buy games on a regular basis?

But my point was that the "hard core" consoles dont live by hardcore games alone, they also live by party games, rhythm games, by anything that will sell, and that includes far more than FPS's and EA sports games.

Yes, I am in full agreement that the Wii is a one-trick pony, while other consoles have variety.

My guess is that both will end up with some variety of games, though it does seem likely the attach rate for the Wii will remain well below the others. But it also seems like there is some serious overlap - not in the sports area, where I agree the Wii looks no serious threat, as in the DDR/GH/party games area, where the Wii will cost the others at least some software sales, and perhaps even some hardware sales.

In Moves magazine of a year before, they talk about how they are using a computer to help design games, since it can be used to keep track of lots of data, and can thus to quickly test lots of combat results combinations. This was apparently considered somewhat radical
