In the original it was adjacent only, understandable because with a two-tile radius cities would grow at an insane rate.

Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

I've actually always though the adjacent only model was better than the two tiles radius.DISCLAIMER: the author of the above written texts does not warrant or assume any legal liability or responsibility for any offence and insult; disrespect, arrogance and related forms of demeaning behaviour; discrimination based on race, gender, age, income class, body mass, living area, political voting-record, football fan-ship and musical preference; insensitivity towards material, emotional or spiritual distress; and attempted emotional or financial black-mailing, skirt-chasing or death-threats perceived by the reader of the said written texts.

I'm not sure how you'd use a two-tile range without wasting a lot of tiles, since a fair amount of the population doesn't work tiles.
This is a pretty interesting game, but the endgame is a bit lacking. I generally kill off the royals in 4-5 turns after independence at most; you don't get much of an opportunity to use those colonial regulars, and before you know it you're forced to quit the program.Lime roots and treachery!

How do you make peace with the natives once they kick off?
In one game the Tupi got mad after I accidently Steven Kinged their burial ground, and they were at war for the rest of the game.
In another I just started, the Iroqs declared spontaneously very early on from a previously peaceful state - without me having done anything provocative, and I'm wondering whether I can make peace with them, or have to concentrate on military units and exterminate 'em.

Yea, I don't like that that you eventually have to wipe out the Indians. They go ballistic when you start moving in the heavy artillery in preparation with the fight with the expeditionary force, regardless of how good a trade partner you've been, whether or not you've armed them against the other Europeans who do want to wipe them out, etc.
One of the leaders you can choose will reduce Indian alarm levels back to green once you pick her. Missionaries will(strangely enough) lower alarm, and provide you with workers(again another leader will assimilate them into free colonists but not after you pick him).
Even with all this occasional raiding parties will attack your cities, and even if you wipe the floor with them they can destroy and steal stuff, its a little annoying, though trade with them more then makes up for that.

Indeed, never forget "that other guy"!
Anyway, help me out here, i never really played the original Colonization.
What big features is this version missing compared to the original?
How do i get military units? Or at least, how can i fend off some sort of Spanish cavalry unit early in the game.<Kassiopeia> you don't keep the virgins in your lair at a sodomising distance from your beasts or male prisoners. If you devirginised them yourself, though, that's another story. If they devirginised each other, then, I hope you had that webcam running.

Ok...and how do i keep my colonies working efficiently at higher population levels? Currently i get a penalty with only 5 colonists.<Kassiopeia> you don't keep the virgins in your lair at a sodomising distance from your beasts or male prisoners.
