A quick hunt through your posts in the archive would serve the purpose of making you look an even bigger ****, the possibility of which would astonish most of Apolyton.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I don't think it is a direct competitor, since the PS3 and 360 seem to be marketed toward older, more hardcore gamers. The profusion of FPS games on those two consoles is a sign of this, as is the preference for multiplayer.

There's a huge market for younger and casual gamers, especially women. Nintendo's stuff seems to be primarily aimed at them. And they seem to be being proven right.

Which is why I mentioned Japan, where, IIUC, the meat and potatos of PS3 game sales are NOT FPS games, so much as games that more directly compete with the Wii.

          • Well I have a PS3, and it is wonderful. I'm in the process of ripping my favourite electronica CDs to it.

            Posted this from it.

Go have a look at the comparative sales of the 360 and PS3 since launch (i.e. track the sales as if both had launched on the same day). The PS3 is about the same as the 360 at this point in its lifespan. Remember, there aren't that many games out for the PS3 yet. When I bought my 360, there were very few games out for the 360, and most of them were crap.

The big problem for Microsoft is that 360 sales have tanked this year. The first two quarters are actually worse than last year. If the PS3 manages to keep increasing sales and doesn't tank, it will be quite interesting. The longer Sony can stay in the game, the better their gamble to wait a year will look.
This is just wrong, if you go to vgcharz (American only) or Gamasutra and align the launch dates you will see that the ps3 is not close to the xbox 360. At 41 weeks out the 360 was around 2.67 million(American only) the ps3 is at 1.9 million(American only).

Sorry, you should check your own facts first. The US is only a fraction of the worldwide market, and frankly, the Xbox is more popular in the US than it is elsewhere (it is virtually non existent in Japan). Worldwide is what matters.

I went to VG chartz and looked at the latest stats. The European PS3 wasn't released until much later than the Euro 360 was, so this counts in Microsoft's favour. Let's just call it one year's difference, since it's easier to work out that way (I think the difference was one or two weeks shy of a year except in PAL territories).

As of this time last year Microsoft had shipped 4,217,149 million consoles worldwide.

As of right now, at roughly the same time, Sony has shipped 4,391,057 PS3 consoles worldwide.

You can even set the graph to compare worldwide sales. It shows the PS3 tracking the 360 in shipments. I've attached it below. It does show the Wii smacking both of them.

                        • Are those numbers shipments to shops or actual sales? I know there are problems for shops in some countries to get the PS3s out.

I don't think there are sales figures. At least I couldn't find them. They must be a roughly accurate guide, since stores aren't going to re-order what is already overstocked.

There's an important caveat, which is that you can't buy a Wii for love or money in many places, so Nintendo's shipments likely don't reflect the extraordinary demand for their console.

It is terribly funny to see Nintendo tearing up the market like this, even though the competition between the Wii and the other two is somewhat oblique.

                            • At this point Nintendo's failure to meet demand reflects badly on them. They've had more than half a year to ramp up production and only a major mistake on their part could explain why they haven't.

If they're still supply-constrained by the time SSBB comes out, it could be a problem for them.

                              • Wii is no longer supply constrained. At least not in my part of Europe.
