    • Did you actually read the figures, Asher? The Wii is outselling the 360 in France, and just trailing in Germany. Of course, the PS2 is tops (by far), followed by the DS.
I make movies. Come check 'em out.

Asher spoke about software sales not hardware.

But the article said that X360 software sales wasn't much higher than Wii (around 6%).

PS2 software sales are very very high compared to others!

        • In the first three months - which was the period covered by the report you were refering to - Wii software accounted for 4.6 percent of the revenues generated by sales of console software (PS2 software dominated with 42.6 percent, followed by the NDS with 24 percent--see story here).

The GfK initially didn't detail the market share of Xbox 360 software, but some other mags asked them and they responded: 6 percent. Keep in mind that the system launched pretty much around the same time it got launched in the US. Again for the sake of comparison: software for the system that launched on December 8, 2006 over here accounted for 4.6 percent, software for the one that has been available since late 2005 accounted for 6 percent. Also keep in mind that Microsoft always brags about the high software attachment rate for their console.
Oh and Btw; I really love my angry icons next to the thread title!! It makes the thread fulll of yyarghhh!

How could PS2 software sales be so high? Doesnt everyone want the latest and snazziest graphics, physics engines, etc?

Gee, I don't know. Maybe it's some high profile new games + having hundreds of millions of consoles?

cronos_qc: I also enjoyed their clarification of "keep in mind the 360 launched some time ago" or whatever. These months are typically dead months in video game sales, especially for established consoles but not bargain consoles.

And yes, Zargon, the Wii is outselling the 360 -- go figure. The point is it's not outselling where it matters, which is in content.

It's a reality check. For all the talk about how amazing the Wii is doing, these people are not checking out its software sales. They're very weak compared to other platforms.

I was always surprised about developers saying they will continue supporting the PS2 consoles by making new games. But now I understand why...

Because PS2 games are cheap to make and there are so many PS2s now that you're guaranteed to sell a lot.

Most PS2 games look better than Wii games. Play better, too, because they don't rely on gimmicky controls without any depth.

but why make new games for an old console? Just the installed base? But shouldnt all the gamers, the kind who buy significant numbers of games, be buying either the 360 or the PS3 to take advantage of the snazzy new graphics, phys engines, etc, etc.

Could we be seeing a point of diminishing returns to sheer processor power?

                      1) Huge install base
                      2) Cheap development cost
                      3) Huge abundance of third-party libraries, game engines, etc to further reduce costs/lifecycle time

Could we be seeing a point of diminishing returns to sheer processor power?
Yes, that's brilliant. It also explains why no one buys PS2 games in favour of PS1 games when PS1 games outsold PS2 games for the first years of its life. There's a point of diminishing returns to sheer processing power, all we need is the 33MHz CPU from the PSX, as evidenced by the fact that you mentioned above.

You are clearly knowledgeable about this subject.

Seriously, are you this dense? Are you seriously contemplating why a console with hundreds of millions of people using them still has very high software sales when the replacement console is priced way out of everyone's pricerange?

Did PS1 games outsell the entire last gen of consoles for this long into its life? I honestly dont know, Im wondering. Did PS1s themselves (IE the hardware) continue to sell as strongly, as PS2s have done?

Wii has sold 9.27 millions worldwide, where 3.81 are in America. In comparison, MS went out with their sales numbers on Xbox360 the other day; 11.6 millions. Ca 2 millions more and a year longer life span. This is going to be interesting as Christmas comes closer and the sales really grows.

There are no official numbers on PS3 so far, but the rumours are saying 3-4 millions.

Not as large as some folks were hoping for, but then theyve got to pay for those extended warranties, and maybe they'll have another price cut later.
