  • X-Box 360 and the lack of top tier games

I have decided to make a new thread on this: the discussion started in the Wii thread but I'm reluctant to threadjack it again as in between the trolling and countertrolling there is some interesting discussion.

The position as I understand is that the X-Box 360 has been out for 18 months or so, and yet despite a few decent games there seems to be nothing spectacular except Gears of War. This always happens to an extent but seems stronger in this case.

    So what gives?

    GameRankings.com disagrees.

It's considerably stronger first 18 months than the Gamecube or PS2 saw, anyway. Or Wii and PS3, software-wise.

You also have to take into account the average game takes 2 years (at least) to develop. Go figure that from May onwards we're looking at some pretty impressive titles coming out.

Well name some games. I looked at all the ones you mentioned in the other thread and nothing stood out.

Since I don't own a 360 I really don't care, but how many games out for the console are exclusive to the platform? How many are out for another system, even if that's PC?
Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.

I'd imagine this is a factor of you simply not being interested. There were an entire generation of Gamecube games that didn't stand out to me.

Actually I'm interested enough to start this thread, and genuinely so since I might get an X-Box 360 if your info on the upcoming price cuts is true.

But you are still dodging, and trying to cover by trolling the Gamecube or Wii. Why is it you are completely unable to have a reasonable discussion on such issues?

Because a Nintendo beat him up and took his lunch money once, obviously.

PS2 took a while to get rolling also. All three consols are still on the wait and see stage for me.

Which is good considering I don't have the money for one.

I'm not dodging. I'm giving you the truth: 2+ year development cycles for the typical game mean that's how long it takes for truly exceptional games on a platform to come out.

It's also no better or worse than other consoles in the past, which is contrary to your OP.

I've addressed your issues directly and coherently, but you choose not to comprehend...which is your problem.

Good games already out: GOW, GRAW, GRAW 2, Rainbow 6, Oblivion, PGR.

Good games coming out this year: Mass effect, Bioshock, Halo 3, and GTA 4 and Assassin's Creed which are both multi-platform I think.

                      Edit: To Asher.

So you insist on being an ass instead of discussing it in a civil fashion.

I accept your argument about the 2 year development cycle, and I accept that that probably explains the glut of top tier titles on the horizon.

However your initial response was to claim there are sufficient top tier games given the context. I am more than willing to believe this if it were fleshed out but am as yet not convinced. In your last post you've just restated again that the X-Box was no worse.

My OP on this is not gospel by any means either - it's not like I have done extensive research. But I will continue to believe it until someone convincingly argues otherwise.

Thanks - some overlap there with games Asher mentioned in the other thread, which looked decent without really blowing anyone away. I'll look at the others though.

There is absolutely nothing that would convince me to buy an Xbox 360 at this stage. Yeah, there are some nice games, but nothing that would become a long time obsession like other games I've played. I prefer my GameCube to be honest, which at least has Animal Crossing, Ikaruga, and Pikmin 1 and 2.

The only thing that could get me excited about the 360 is if Treasure releases a new schmup - the third game in the Silvergun/Ikaruga series.

I'm quite happy with my GameCube as well, but the 360 is beginning to impress me. Mass Effect, Bioshock... many good games are coming out for it that, even if on PC, I will not have the PC to play for quite a while. The major sticking point for me is that the 360 is optimized for HD (even to the point that games can become unreadable on SD TVs). Even if I were willing to shell out hundreds of bucks for a 360, I'd consider it a brick without hooking it up to an HDTV that costs even more.

The 360: The console I will consider buying in three or four years. In the meantime, I'll mooch off others so I can play Bioshock.

Sure. It'll be bundled with a sequel to Nights Into Dreams, a revolutionary EA Sports title, and Duke Nukem Forever.

It'll be on PS3 anyway, if they bother at all, which I doubt greatly.
