        Lust for Glory

‘Alright everybody’ said Stephen ‘it‘s the night b4. Let’s have some fun’. Get the drinks organized.

        ’Old situations,
        New complications,
        Nothing portentous or polite;
        Tragedy tomorrow,
        Comedy tonight!

        Something familiar,
        Something peculiar,
        Something for everybody:
        Comedy tonight!
        Something that's gaudy,
        Something that's bawdy--
        Something for everybawdy!

        Comedy tonight!’

Stop the Band said Stephen. ‘We’re going to have a ‘Lurve’ crossword. That’s the theme, all the answers have a love/ romance theme.’ What we’ll do is ask everyone in turn, their answer to the clues. They’re not that hard.

‘Mark, 1 across: a loving nickname from Bees?’(5 letters). ‘Horny’ thought Trip Payne. ‘Bumble’ said Mark, ‘joking, Honey’ of course’. ‘Right’ said Stephen ‘You’re through’.

‘John, 1 down: A part of you given in love? (5 letters) ‘Heard ’ instantly thought Trip Payne. ‘Heart, far too easy’ said John Graham. ‘Right. You’re through’. said Stephen
’What’s going on here’ thought Trip. ‘Am I hard of hearing?’

‘Jon you, 4 across: roamin’ statue to Goddess of Love? (5 letters). Second letter ‘e’, third ‘n’, fifth ‘s’. said Stephen. ‘So easy’ ran through Trip’s mind, of course it’s… ‘ Venus’ answered Jon. ‘wtf’ thought Trip..

‘Timothy, Saint of Love?’ 13 down’ (9 letters) asked Stephen. ‘I should definitely know this’ responded Timothy.. ‘Let me think’. Trip thought ‘Valentino’. ‘Valentine’ answered Tim. ‘Correct’ confirmed Stephen.

‘Craig? 5 down: Love notes’ (7 letters) asked Stephen. ‘from France perhaps’ pondered Trip. Ha ha said David, ‘Letters’, he answered. ‘Whoops’ thought Trip.

Trip Payne’s blood pressure was rising. He looked at Will Shortz. He looked at Berit. Hmmm. There was more than blood pressure rising.

Next Fred, 7 down An asset in the bedroom, begins with M, fourth letter T ends with S (8 letters) Mistress surely thought Trip. Tricky one said Fred. ‘Mattress’. Yes.

A.N Prahlada, yours’ said Stephen: 6 across: ‘An Illustrated guide? Inside could cause trauma. Ask why? (4,5) ‘Easy for me’ said A.N ‘Kama Sutra’

Then it was Trips turn. It had just turned midnight. By now Trip was in a right state of agitation, no longer luxuriating in the attention. He was obviously flushed. Stephen said 9 Across: A Movie. Draw deadly close together? (5,10). Trip was thinking ‘Black Something’ No no. Fatal, yes Fatal … But he never got to finish. He ran over to the big open fire. He collapsed into it. He was no longer in pain; he was dead. Full stop.

This is too tragic for words, said Noel Jeesop. Ellen Ripstein and Berit were comforted by Merle Reagle and David Stickley. Naturally the evening was over. Enchanted it was not.

Will Shortz and Manny Nosowsky discussed the death..

‘By the look of him he has been poisoned. It seems to have effected his mind’ said Will. ‘Yes’, said Manny ‘You could see that everytime a love word was answered it increased his blood pressure.

Stephen said. ‘It could only have been one of us’. Let’s sort this out ourselves. Nobody leave the convention. Look you are all bright people and you are surrounded by clues. Choose someone. Meanwhile help me carry Trip to the big freezer for storage.. He was already quite stiff.

Hmmm. I expected that one to last longer. Underestimated.

I was hoping you'd use 'armless in the Venus clue.

Not doing so well with the clues without brackets after them yet though, so I'll go for Heresson.

If you add the numbers that lable the words you get 46. If you add the letters you get 63. If those numbers mean anything, I can't figure it out.

I sent the words "love word" (since it was the cause of death) trough "Andy's anagram solver" and got, among lots of weird results, "old vower". Now, what can an old vow hint to, if it hints to anything that is? Well, a quick search on a few of the names we've got, gives that John Galbraith Graham is born in 1921(old) and is an Chrich of England priest(vow). Not much, for good enough for me so early in the game.

It must be difficult though in a foreign language to pick your way through stuff like this. Fair play to you.
