OK, I have small fighters, small cargos, and esp probes. Let's go kick some hiney!

I'm in U17, and it looks crowded. Almost everyone is in an alliance. Should that deter me from raiding them, if the player is inactive? Where are the free planets to colonize?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Don't worry about inactives being in alliances.

      Download this tool

You can sim your attacks, not needed if there is no defense.

You send your colony ships to open slots (usually slots 4, 5, or 6).

I think that is all you questions.

Oh, when you send a probe to a planet and you don't get much info, that means his esp is higher than yours, you'll need to send more probes to see more and be careful cuz they could be lost.

It's amazing that there are so many inactives without any defense at all on their planets. Just pull up with your freighters and load them to the gills.

Well, I tried to get into it at the beginning with you guys, but it just wasn't doing it for me. At least you're enjoying yourselves. That's all that matters. Nice hit btw.

Indeed, there are some annoying and unfun things in this game. However, overall I'm enjoying myself thus far.

                Spaced: When it says...

                C a p t u r e
                Metal: 147'997
                Crystal: 107'983
                Deuterium: 263'734
Does that mean 148 million, 108 million, 264 million, etc? I'm confused by the ' mark versus the Euro use of the period.

Also, I've noticed that I can only take half of a planet's resources when I attack. Is there something I'm not doing correctly?

                Lastly, what's a fleet save?

                Btw, congrats on the #1!

Yeah, you only get half, that is the way it works. No those are only thousands. We did not make money off the resources on the planet.

When fleets meet there are losses. About 1/3 of the loses of the original cost of the ship turns into debris. Using the recycler ships, you can pick up debris. Hence the link above is a fleetcrash, where the real profit was in the debris. (well over 200M debris with about 50M in profit minus our losses).

Fleetsaving/resource saving. Sending your fleet from one planet to another on an overnight trip so that you will not be crashed while you are sleeping. The fleet will arrive after you are back on so that you can recall if someone phalanxes you (uses thier moon to get fleet trip information). The game gets real serious when you cross the 5K points line and even guys like me can attack you.

The game seems very simple at first, but is deeply complex on many levels.

                      Planetary Defense

Let's talk defense. When I have lasers and rockets on a planet, do they extend to any battle that happens in orbit?

I ask because sometimes I might have a surplus of metals, so I invest in lasers. It would be nice to know how much protection, if any, I am affording my fleet while in orbit.

Further, is having a truckload of small lasers effective planetary defense? Or do you have to buy large lasers? I guess the question really comes down to whether effectiveness moving small to big scales linearly or geometrically.

Attack your planetary defences in Speedsim with different forces to see how effective your defences are against them. IIRC small lasers only affect fighters and maybe a few other small ships. Bigger ships are immune. Mind you, I haven't played for a year so my memory may be off.

Rockets and lasers are counters to light fighters.

heavy lasers/ guass cannons are counters to heavy fighters and cruisers.

                          plasmas are counters to battleships.

ion cannons, and the domes just keep the rest alive longer.

You are smart to spend a bit on defense.

The key is to not make it profitable for someone to attack you.

The formula for me is 100k in profit. This includes any ship losses, so if my overall profit was 150k, and I lost 20k in ships then it was a good attack in my book (for raiding). Also duet costs need to be covered so watch it if you get too much duet.

In other words, yeah I can bash someone's defense with 500 battleships and make 100k, but 500 bs take a lot of duet to power and if there is only minimal duet then I can loose money on the deal, hence I won't attack.

There is a formula begging to come out here, but I'm just too lazy to figure it out.

                                mmm

I remember back in my planetarion days doing some pretty complex spreadsheets figuring out various things Particularly the beginning game, when a round would start and we'd all start over from scratch... figuring out the optimal builds for the entire galaxy and spending hours and hours on irc talking about it. It was fun though

My last game my galaxy had 5 in the top 100 I think (out of like 60,000 players or something) and I hit a high of 5th overall in the early game ... of course I was lousy at the later game so that didn't last

I did find myself doing way too much in terms of staying up late and getting up early and never sleeping enough, which is why I quit. That and my GF told me to stop staying at home all day and go get a job (this was in the last half of my senior year of college and then just after graduating) ...
