I could never get into these kinds of games. Even when the game has a certain appeal (Eve is a bit like a MP version of Elite -a dream come true!?-) i still have to ignore it*. The simple reason i just cannot invest the time and attention into these sort of games to make it worthwhile.

Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

You can get ahead (at a lesser rate) without having to spend all your attention constantly watching and interacting with the game. You can also do things that require more attention and hence give better rewards. *Sigh* Having choices is so hard.

Grinding almost always can be boring, no matter what the game.

Why not have something interesting to do.

Here's a novel idea - why not just play a fun game to start with!

There are lots of fun things in EVE.

Also, for competitive games (like EVE), everything doesn't need to be fun.

Yeah, watching TV whilst you play sure sounds really competitive.

You really seem to have a one track mind in reguards to this game Spikey

Not really - though I don't particularly want to play it I respect the game for offering something different. Read my first post.

I just don't see how the fact the gameplay some choose is so uninvolving that you may as well watch TV at the same time can be considered a plus point. To claim this is because Eve is about competition not fun is even more absurd - competitive games require actual attention.

I pwn j00 all at watching TV!

I have played games where I feel compelled to sit at my computers for unending hours without leaving (anyone else remember "just one more turn" syndrome in civ? ). I don't want to play another where the game play is so involving that i forget about real life while I sit in front of my computer.

Maybe TV is a bad example, but my point above was more that I am looking for a game where I don't get lost in playing the game and lose sight of what else is going on around me. I was wondering is Eve was the former or the latter.

                          Black and white thinking Spikey

You are taking the example out of context Anyone who plays afk in lo sec or no sec is going to get ganked.

But for someone who has a "real life", there are alternative ways to play EVE and get ahead, one of them being afk mining.

I was earlier using that as an example of "you can play this game anyway you want, when you want to".

But trust me when you are hunting pirates in lo sec or trying to get thru a bubble camp in no sec, the game needs constant attention and becomes very compelling. When I have the time to sit down and play for a few hours thats what I do.

When I dont, I afk mine in hi sec (as long as there isn't a wardec on) its still a way to make money.

Its all about choices silly and wide open game play. So turn off your TV, and try to get the point

I am not taking this out of context - you are simply making a different point than this one I responded to!

The quoted post says the game has grind, which almost always can be boring, so you may as well have something more interesting to do, i.e watching TV, which was given as an example by Jon.

Your argument (and Skanky's I think) is that there is a variety of ways to play which is nice because it gives you flexibility to fit your gaming around other life commitments (which presumably aren't just TV). I've no problem with that at all.

You have been going on and on about the TV things which is what I responded too...

You get points for trying though

You have it the wrong way around. People choose that gameplay because they can do something else at the same time. If you can get more isk by mining with minimal attention to the game, I don't see how that is a bad thing. In other games, if you don't have time to play, you don't get ahead. Again, that isn't something to brag about.

To claim this is because Eve is about competition not fun is even more absurd - competitive games require actual attention.
Yes, competitive games require actual attention. The competition in afk-Eve comes in choosing your setup to do whatever you do afk, choosing what to do while doing something else, and then converting whatever you did into isk at the end of it. Hooray for market PvP. The alert amongst us will note that each of these steps requires attention, even if the main portion of the time spent does not.
