Still a 10MB download limit on XNA is an issue from my point of view, and the view i'm trying to express to you.
Where did you hear about 10MB download limit?

The XNA download on the 360 is about 10MB in size...your game can be however big you want it. If you want to distribute it on Xbox Live Arcade, it's 250MB max. If you want to distribute it on disc, it's 8GB max per disc...

$99 to make a version of Pacman(or something equally basic) compared to $0 to make the same(or something more ambitous) on PC?
But it doesn't cost $0. Look into bandwidth/website hosting costs and suddenly $99/year including support doesn't seem that bad...especially considering how huge of a target market you get in comparison.

These are good arguments, and it is new news to me.

However, lets look at the big picture here, we have so many different consoles + the PC. Publishers are making games for a number of consoles but not for the PC and others are making it for the PC but not for the consoles. This is an issue, I'm not going to buy a console, yet there are games I have seen on XBox's and PS's that I would like to play on the PC but can't and vice versa for console users. I can't help but think that must be lost $ to the publishers.

Microsoft can take the gaming industry by the balls if it can solve the compatibility problem between its own console (XBox) and the PC. Eventually this tactic would phase out the other consoles because their games are only compatible with one console (and maybe a few others).

ok i may have misunderstood the 10MB download limit and what exactly it refers to.

On the cost side you need to factor in your monthly 'live' out goings also - i forgot about that(not having or ever wanting that service for my consoles).

I should make it clear that i like what XNA is going to do to console gaming(360 gaming that is) - give a platform for people to express their creativity on a console, a platform traditionaly 'locked out' for the end user.

So on that issue i applaud it's approach.

Still, having seen(to my mind) the general fall in the quality of the gaming experience over the last decade or so - and a fall that has accelerated in the last 4-5 years in particular; I find it hard to see this attempt being able to free itself from the malaise that IS the mainstream games industry at present. It will be part and born out of the problem.

Still i know Asher's view is completely opposite to mine on this issue, so i don't expect him to understand.

Another thing that worries me about this 'homogenous' approach to console(specificaly Microsoft) and PC development that Snoopy mentioned; is that i wonder if we will see the creep of monopoly enter into the whole process of development on a MS platform?

All the talk of DX10 etc and much of the 'noise' that i hear coming from MS on all the issues around 'Windows gaming' does make me wonder if with the unifying end goal from the corporate stand point is going to actualy be the death of independent gaming on PC, or at the very least having to jump through MS hoops to be allowed to use their product in games?

So i'm still not convinced consoles ensure better games(and from my personal experience definately do not), and the whole monopoly power structure they symbolise i can't see developing into the saviour of gaming as a whole and especially not PC gaming, where it's quite obvious that a PC game designed for consoles first will always have issues that will make it the weaker of the two.

Heh - we have gone quite of the topic...........or maybe not, i'm still in favour of throwing rocks at 'all' consoles in general

I think there is light in what MS is doing. The PC is still their main money maker. The PC is still potentially the greatest gaming machine.

As far as I am concerned, Sony lost the console battle this time and since MS has DX10, I think Sony is about to fall short from here on in. Publishers will shift to MS, building games which work on both PC and XBox (Which I imagine DX10 (or 11?) will solve the compatibility issue. Logo's you see on game boxes won't have "PC CDROM" and "Xbox" it will have "Microsoft". In other words, if you are running a Microsoft product/OS, the game will work.

While this is definitely a monopoly over the gaming industry, I am all for it, publishers and developers need direction and support, MS can provide this solution and it's not as if the publishers and developers are working for Microsoft directly.

Like I said before, MS can take the gaming industry by the balls, and it should, as long as the gaming community is free to choose to play the game on Windows or XBox.

I hope your faith in MS is the good path it could be. I worry that with xbox+ now 360, MS has lots of $$$ flashing before it's eyes - and may be aiming to make a windows PC as 'owned' as a console in terms of games production and permissions.

            I'm very cynical

Yes because we all know that monopolies lead to more innovation, lower prices and better customer service.............
