Does this have something to do with Mr Do?
Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

Clue 5: There were well over 10 games featuring our often eponymous hero.

            Mario Bros.

            ACK!
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust!

Monty is Innocent although Mario sounds more likely.

Clue 6: Predominantly on Spectrum/C64/Amstrad, though there were some games that appeared on the Amiga, and some of the later games appeared on an even wider set of platforms.

I think we already had Mr Dizzy?

Well it's not on the list.

                        It's not the answer anyway.

                            ah!

"Fast Food"? - its was in the dizzy series(the only series on reflection i could think of that could have had over 10 versions). It was like a version of pac-man i think?

CapTVK's guess got me on the right trak - if it is the answer.

Thank god for that. With the obscure clues I could see that going on for all 500 posts.
