  • World of Warcraft versus Guild Wars

Ok, I recently won a $50 giftcard where I work (Super Target).

First, I plan to buy what I need -- a pair of good shoes. And I'm thinking about maybe buying an online playing game like WoW or Guild Wars with the rest of the money on the giftcard.

IIRC, Guild Wars does not require any subscription fee, whereas WoW does require members to pay a subscription in order to play the game. What are other plusses and negatives of these two games when comparing one to the other? Or, if you have another game similar to these two in mind that you think is greater, let me know.

When I told one of my friends that I plan to buy an online-playing game such as Guild Wars, he made a face and said that all it is just beating up others to rise up in experience levels. He had such a minimalistic description of these types of games that I'm not sure if I will eventually buy such a game at all.

So in meantime, while I wait to hear from anyone on here, I am going to try to look up positive and negative reviews onlilne of WoW and Guild Wars.

Both are good games. If you play them purely to level or something, than yeah, they are dull.

If you play them and interact with people, etc, then they are good. Combat in GW is better, as there is a PvP focus. WoW is a lot bigger, and more like a regurlar MMO game. GW is more like a PvP game, with an optional RPG story which can be done with others (but generally doesn't have to be.. my freind Soloed almost everything).

They are something to try, I don't recommend giving your life to them though. Some focus more on being open worlds then games (old SWG, SoR, EVE also). These can be cool, when well done (EVE is great), however, they are a lot less game.

err. 50 buck giftcard for a good pair of shoes and then you'll have money left over?

          That's rich.

I spent 250 on my last shoes.

The answer to your question depends on what you are looking for. GW is a more relaxed game, and isn't really an MMO. You can jump in and play, or play obsessively, or anything in between. It's also more tactical than WoW.

However if you like MMOs you may find GW over too fast, unless you are ok with replaying with other characters or doing PvP (which is excellent btw). WoW has more longevity and character progression. Some would call this grind, others would not.

WoW sounds more interesting in this aspect, but the fact that Guild Wars has no subscription fee really gives it some weight.

GW has a lot more tactical depth than WoW - but you'll need more than 50 bucks for either - WoW will have you paying monthly, while GW is so good you'll want to buy the new chapters too

Well I visited the official website of Guild Wars last night and spent about an hour going through different links and reviewing the info.

Today I will check out WoW's official website. I still have yet to get around to looking at reviews for either.

Both got great reviews. Having said that I don't really find online reviews that useful these days - better to state your preferences and ask here.

Well some of my preferences is that I want to be able to play for an incredibly looooong time in a game like this, with real, in-depth story development and character growth.

I think I would be comfortable playing solo while interacting with other players, or playing as part of a group.

I really wish the companies that made GW and WoW were not so stingy, and provide some kind of demo that you could play for maybe like ten minutes or something.

My laptop has a touchpad instead of a mouse. How easy or difficult would movement, combat, and menu controls be with a touchpad??

I would definately invest in a mouse. You really won't be able to play properly without one. I have a laptop as well and the touchpad is ok for surfing and basic tasks. If you game you need a mouse.

As for trying out the games... I thought there were free trials for WOW. Maybe not anymore.

Character development in GW is not so much in roleplaying but getting skills and developing combinations you like to play. There is a story but I wouldn't say it's the greatest. GW really shines in the PvP area.

I only played the WoW beta so I don't know how it is right now. WoW was fun for me as well but I like not having to pay a monthly fee (although I might start with Eve)
