I must confess I still haven't gotten past the menu system to actually get into the game. I don't think any of my characters have hit level 2 yet...

There are many gui mods on TESSource, Major Jim~something is a good one and the one I´m using.The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power. Not wealth or luxury or long life or happiness: only power, pure power.

No, I don't think there is one that puts the magic, inventory, skill and map interfaces all on the screen at once. However, I highly recommend the BTmod, which at least scales things to a reasonable PC level GUI.Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.

Well, Cid, I suppose you and I are just going to have to agree to disagree. Like you, I've played the previous games, and I really like Oblivion. It's not perfect by a long shot (the interface really is inexcusable), but I've been able to use mods to make it a lot better. Could it have been (a lot) better? Absolutely. Did they concentrate on graphics over substance? It sure looks that way. However, I had loads of fun playing it, probably got 200+ hours out of it, so I'm not upset at all.
Quillian = better
Ball Lightning = better
El_Cid = worse
Sir Ralph = worse
Others = no clear statement yet?

I bought Oblivion and played it for a fair length of time, about 2-3 weeks. After that, though, it just began to feel....empty? The game lacks the "personality" that Morrowind had, I think. In Morrowind, I felt like I was truely somewhere else, but in Oblivion it seems fictional and trivial.
It isn't a bad game, but it's one of those "seasonal" games: I play it for a week or two, wait a month or two, repeat...Not like games like Civ, where I play constantly.Empty.

I know what you mean AmericanCitizen - the initial wow factor because of the graphics wore off much more quickly for me. I have a sneaky suspicion that that aspect is key to how long someone can actualy enjoy the game. Oblivion does feel very empty, which is kind of odd as it does have lots of dungeons to explore, possibly because once you've done one they are pretty much of a likeness - with no real reward at the end of it?
For me graphics are pretty much last on my list of what makes a good game so that might explain why it was less than ordinary for me? Others seem to enjoy it longer but maybe they like the detail of the graphics and the way they depict the world - its certainly fun luring a goblin into its own trap and watching bodies fly around with your hits from combat.
Still those reasons are the last type of reasons i want to play an rpg, imho those reasons are for fps gaming.
In an rpg I want depth and to feel part of a story, prefrebly of my own making, and have lots of interesting choices. Oblivion has none of this as far as i can tell. The story is incredibly liniar and is all about the action at the Oblivion gates. The side quests are ok and some are well written, but often seem to have hardly any choices in them, often none with only one possible dialogue choice.
hmm maybe i should add you to the No list
Oblivion best TES so far?
Quillian = better
Ball Lightning = better
El_Cid = worse
Sir Ralph = worse
AmericanCitizen = worse
I remember the huge amount of threads we had on Morrowind, they went on for years; i think that is inditement enough of Oblivions failure as a TES.
But i'll keep adding people who declare their loyalty to either camp and will be happy to eat humble pie if so needed

I loved Oblivion for the first two hours I played. After ten hours, I still enjoyed it. After a week, I stopped playing "to pick it up again later", and haven't gone back. The game just loses you as it drags on. The repetitiveness and lack of true depth are why.
I have not played other TES games so no opinion there.Cake and grief counseling will be available at the conclusion of the test. Thank you for helping us help you help us all!

Note, I agree with the above statement.. of course, I think that is true of all SP games.
I just think that Oblivion did better than Morrowind.

Morrowind didn't have voice acting, but when I talked with someone, I felt that they had a little more background (even if it was just random stuff that all the other bots had) than here in Oblivion. I can't "chit chat" with people in Oblivion, all I can do is ask them about rumours and quest-related things. I don't know what profession these people are, what political beliefs they have, etc...It really detracted from the game for me.
I also didn't really think the story of Oblivion was compelling. I just wasn't really curious as to what was going to happen next. Plus, throughout Morrowind there was a lot of Lore to explore. There is lore here, too, but...I don't know, it seems different.
I kind of felt like the number of quests was small. I don't know if Morrowind had this problem, but it seemed to me like I was doing empty tasks, and then after a couple days, I had nothing interesting left. I could go out and explore the world, of course, but rarely anything new happend (The dungeons all blurred together, the occasional robber, etc)
And now they want me to pay them to get more quests, lol.
Morrowind was more addicting (my grades suffered during my Morrowind months lol) but Oblivion is just...underwhelming somehow.
If you like Oblivion, great! I like it too. I just think Morrowind is better.Empty.
