Well, I have another game to add to my list of things I'm picking up: Darkstar One.

I downloaded the demo (all 950 megs of it) and tried it out; it reminds me a LOT of Privateer. It might be the nostalgia effect, but I'm still going to get it when it releases.

      My list (revised):

      Buy on sight:
      - NWN2
      - Settlers II (TNG)
      - HOI2 Doomsday (don't have it yet)

      Buy eventually:
      - EU3
      - Civ4 Warlords

Keep a (not too close) eye for:
      - Spore
      - EQ2 Echoes of Faydwer
      - Medieval II: Total War

It's in the same category as Echoes of Faydwer, which I will buy about as soon as icicles show up at the Hell's entry. I hope this comforts you somewhat.

Hmm, you still said you'd keep an eye on it, even if it wasn't too close. Of course if it meant keep an eye on it for comedy value I'll allow it.

              Ack!!

I looked for the first three episodes of Monkey Island on Amazon. Theres a compendium of all three for the nominal prices of $130 US !!!! One of them, I think the first, was availble on its own only for $80 or more. The second, I think, was over $40.

I was a bit taken aback, not have heard such prices for hold games since I followed the SMAC xpack.

I also saw that TOAW Century of War was about $50, but THAT at least was for the game and all the xpacks, and historical war games tend to hold their value.

That is completely insane. Sure, they are good games, but they are old. Really old.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

In defence of lord of the mark, this is partly why i created this thread - to show that gaming is not in as healthy a state as many think(or would like us to think). So the fact he is resorting to old games he might have missed first time around is imho quite understandable.

I was lucky and picked up the Monkey Island Bounty Pack a few years ago for the grand sum of £10 from my local store, It includes the first three games - i wasn't that interested in the later versions. I had played the origonal on my amiga, but knew these were classics and would be worth getting and keeping hold of.

Its true my list has grown, so things were not as dire as i had first thought - thats why its cool to come here as this is one of the few places on the net where gaming knowledge and experience is combined with good posting and posters

Still overall my list is not that impressive - with maybe just one 'must have' title on the list and the rest games i know i will probably enjoy, but could live without.

And this is the point of the thread i guess - atleast we can try here to confirm the messeage that all is well with gaming, or not as the case may be.

We're not talking mainstream gaming either - the 'consoleification'(if that makes sense to people?) of gaming is the root cause of the illness. Sure lots of money is being made in games - its recently become bigger than hollywood in terms of finacial turnover, but the problem i'm finding as a long time gamer(and not necessarily a hard-core gamer, i like simple too sometimes) is that gone are the days when i would browse the latest magazine(or net page today) in anticipation of some really great games coming my way.

Now i'm 90% certain everytime that i will probably find nothing, and i'm not often dissapointed. And its nothing to do with myself having changed over the years - i am still the gamer i always was; looking for something special amongst the dross, something beyond the ordinary.
Now everything is pretty(pun about graphices!) ordinary, and often i find myself doing what lord of the mark made reference to - looking back to older titles i may have missed.

I dont think this is a good reflection on the quality/'specialness' of what the games industry produces and has become?

But as i've found out there is hope - some companies are still trying to produce that special game, its just sad that in this very creative industry 99% has decided not to bother with this objective anymore, and is perfectly happy to churn out rubbish(even popular rubbish).

                  sorry rant over

The first two games are tiny (in MB terms not gameplay terms!) and you can download them easily. The third you can probably quite easily still buy.

Are they that easy to find though? While I can't check at work, I'm sure the Dogs of Under don't allow download of these games due to them being on sale. OTOH, I have never really looked for them to download, what with me already owning legal copies when they came out back in the day.

Wow! thats crazy - if i was Lucasarts i would start to re-issue the first two(or three?) games in a special new collectors edition, with a price tag to reflect its uniqueness, like $50?
I cant believe the price these games are going for!(i thought Daggerfall was pretty crazy cost wise!)

and on Lucasarts site they only still appear to sell part 4 in the series:

Like LOTM I tend to buy older games i missed first time around. Combination of cost and stability (patches etc) being the main drivers.

                          Shopping list:
                          Gothic 3
                          UFO Aftershock (mixed reviews though)
Halflife 1+ 2 (ok never got round to playing them)
Rome Total War (although haven;t really played Medieval much yet)
                          Supreme Ruler 2010
Crown of Glory (or maybe Empires in Arms)

The much bigger list of course is games i buy and never play. I see there's an Art of War 3 and i've still never got beyond the tutorial in last one.

Actually the cost/stability thing you mentioned is a good point - i hate getting a new game and finding out it is 'broken'

Lol thats why Oblivion pi*sess me of so much so far,the cost including my new pc to play it, made it the most expensive 'broken' game i've ever bought!

Out of interest i see you have Rome Total War on the list, but not the new Medieval2 - might that be a new game you could add to your list?
And RTW is a good buy at present as you can get a cheap bundle with all the expansions also - i've been considering it i must admit, another for my list

Yeah they aren't on HotU IIRC, but someone told me there are other means, though I'm not sure what they meant. The games are cult classics and very small - someone will be sharing them if such other means existed, which I cannot verify at this time, but believe to be the case.

                                Definitely:
                                Victoria: Revolutions
                                Supreme Commander
                                Europa Universalis III

                                Maybe:
Axis&Allies (the Kohan-based RTS that came out two years ago)
                                CivCity
                                Civ4: Warlords
                                Caesar IV
                                Galactic Civilizations II
                                Hearts of Iron 2: Doomsday
