Unreal World owns both Nethack and ADOM. Check out the screenshots first from the lower menu here, then move to the download-section if the images caught your interest. It's shareware, but I bought it for 100 FIM (~$20) back in late 2001, and haven't regretted it.

my best time of nethack was a cursed ring of polymorph
I killed mini great beasts, leveled a lot (I think I was some badass thing for a bit).. and then died from getting stuck in an area with no food

The best ring in rogue is a ring of slow digestion. Extremely nice.(\__/) 07/07/1937 - Never forget

Nethack is a cool game, with lots of sly jokes buried inside it, but I find it unfulfilling in the end. I've made it to the quest level a couple times as a wizard, but usually get bored with it before that. I just can't shake the feeling that I'm fighting against the random number generator.

ADOM > UrW > Nethack
Seriously, though... hm. I think I should try out Unreal World 2.91. It doesn't seem to have much in the way of interesting new features, however, UrW is one of those games that I simply like to play for a few days every year and I haven't played it yet this year.
And in case you haven't read the Fargo column on the game... http://www.gamespy.com/articles/517/517647p1.htmlThis is Shireroth, and Giant Squid will brutally murder me if I ever remove this link from my signature | In the end it won't be love that saves us, it will be mathematics | So many people have this concept of God the Avenger. UnReal World is awsome.
Nothing as fun as playing hurt, helpless, and afraid or escaped slave in the winter.
I had good one going where I had to tear apart all my clothes to bandage my wounds, so I ended up crawling through the snow naked looking for food. I was begining to starve when I came apon a fox and was able to (very luckily) take him down in one swift swipe with my dagger. His meat stopped me from starving to death that night and I was able to continue on a little longer, eventually I found a cave and came across a hunter sleeping in it. The thought occured to me that I could slit his throat while he slept and take his food, but I thought maybe I could just sneak around and steal some with out him noticing - not to mention I was worried about him having friends with him that I didn't see. Unfortunetly, all that was in there was a horse which I startled causing the hunter to wake up. He didn't attack me, but he wouldn't speak to me either or give me any help, so I crawled back out of the cave to my shelter outside and slept - thinking that I would come back the next night and kill him, if I didn't find any food in the mean time. When I went back to the cave he was awake, however, and I didn't feel that my crippled self would stand a chance against an able hunter. But I was starving and desperately needed food, bso I dragged myself past him, deeper into the cave with the hope of finding a rat or something. However, what I found was a wild Lynx. It tore me to shreds as I was trying to climb back up the passage way. I wonder if the hunter knows he's sharing a cave with a Lynx. I should of slit his throat while I had the chance.Rethink Refuse Reduce Reuse

Actually, I prefer a ring of poison resistance; I can't remember the last time I died from starvation. I play a wizard character (if I'm playing a game with magic, I want to be able to cast some spells!), and hate to lose any of my meager strength to poisoning. Not to mention insta-death from poison...
Oh, also I was talking about the original rogue. In other variants there are probably more ways to get food. For example in moria you can buy from the general store, so it's not a big problem. So the best ring is a ring of speed instead.
