  • I've started playing nethack....

    Heaven help me! ><

Tried it about a dozen times in the past at prompting of friends but always thought it was stupid.

    Now.... i'm enjoying it.

There are about a zillion guides out there, any specifics guides anyone can recommend that they liked?

Gamecube64's totally awesome guide of awesomeness (and awesome stuff like that):

Don't eat kobolds (unless an orc, I think...)
Don't try to stuff yourself even more while satiated to avoid food spoilage.

How do I tell if an item is cursed or blessed, as a priest?

How do I learn NEW spells?

How do I tell what the hell a scroll does, even if I am a wizard?

        Hmm.

        Identify scrolls

I only played Moria/Angband, but they're similar, so i suspect that's the answer. Or the Identify prayer, which priests I believe get maybe level 9 or 10?

        Before that, scrolls.

same here. The number ONE thing you can do is BE PATIENT. rushing through will get you killed. either do that or save/reload.

if you want spoilers there are great sites out, but I'd recommend stumbling through the game at random

google nethack spoilers if you're interested.

Nethack was one of the very, very old "roguelike" ASCII graphics RPGs. You may have heard of Moria (a variant)?

Basically, you choose a race and sex, randomly generate a background and randomly or semirandomly generate character stats. Then you go down into the Dungeon and start killing things.

It's basically a dungeon crawler, the dungeon has many levels (angband, one variant I've played, has 100) and each level is randomly generated ...think a really huge Diablo

                How do you reload.....?

As far as I can tell, you only save on exit, and can never load except when you start the program up.

I've been playing the visual version... I can't handle ascii ><

Technically you can't. Rogeulikes have no persistent save - ie, if you die in the game, your character is dead, start over again.

That said, it's possible to duplicate the save that it makes when you exit the game (ie, copy/paste) and 'reload' from that. That's sort of considered cheating, by hardcore players, but most people do it, i'd guess.

This is one picture of the game (with some semigraphical tiles).

This is one on my machine with the full ASCII tileset

Ahhhh, memories, I played Moria and others like it as a teenager (trying to remember other names, Zorg?)

Looks worth checking out if only for the memories (and my dinosaur computer might even be able to handle it).
