I just played Heritage of Kings a bit...it's really nothing like Settlers 2 anymore and a lot more like AoE or something. Hardly takes any effort anymore to get a smooth economy running
<Kassiopeia> you don't keep the virgins in your lair at a sodomising distance from your beasts or male prisoners. If you devirginised them yourself, though, that's another story. If they devirginised each other, then, I hope you had that webcam running.
Play Bumps! No, wait, play Slings!

It looks like Settler 2 with Settler 4 graphics.
Cake and grief counseling will be available at the conclusion of the test. Thank you for helping us help you help us all!

A (German) demo has just been released. I've only played for a short time, but it does feel like The Settlers II

Though I need a better computer to run this game... I'm planning on getting a new computer though, which I'll hopefully get before this game is released

Wow, you need a powerhouse to run Settlers these days.

I'll have to take a look at this. And possibly brush up on my German.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

You even need a powerhouse to run Civilization. That's called technical progress.

.....or a conspiracy between hardware+software manufacturers, or just plain lazy programming

Still this is one game i will be getting - if it retains the workings of the Settlers games(1+2) then even if it is in German, i should be able to work it out.

I still play Settlers II - even though the remark about its origonal game play still being addictive enough might have some merit?

Still as with 'Heritage of Kings', and games like that, i feel most companies have forgotten the way to make games like this good. Hopefully Settlers II(mk2) will not be like them.

And its not just Germans who like simulations/strategy/wargames the most! I think its just a reflection of the console dominance in the US+UK market that can paint this unfocused picture. Sadly the push to 'consolify' our gaming does have a price.

I hope it does well - i fondly remember spending months on the origonal Settlers. Months of quiet, relaxing and thoughtful building - it was a nice way to spend my time, and it could be a refreshing change from the norm

Add the customer to the conspiracy mix, who simply wouldn't shell out money for a chessboardesque interface. It would suffice in terms of gameplay, but it is pretty much not to sell nowadays.

What the increasingly complicated (and hence difficult code-wise) graphics have to do with lazy programming, remains to be explained, even despite the winking smiley.

Someone fancy an attached MIDI of the original Settlers game track?

Don't worry, it shouldn't give you any trouble. Most of the game feels like the old Settlers 2, so even if you can't understand what it says, for old settlers fans you don't need to read that much

I only played for like 20 minutes or so, can't wait till I home from work

You might not need to brush up on your German, I just noticed that in the /date/language/ folder there is a /de/ and /gb/ folder. I just rename /de/ to /de_old/ and /gb/ to /de/ and now the menu is in English... didn't see if it works in the game though
