Oblivion already adjusts the "resolution" in the distance (it's called adaptive LOD).

Btw, I'm level 6 right now, and loving it. In Morrowind at this point, I would have been going through portions of the game easily (by level 10, one of the most powerful things in the game). In Oblivion, the battles are still challenging
. I don't feel like enemies are just a nuisance, but they actually make me work.
I love this level scaling system“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

I think the scaling might be too steep, actually. I went into a dungeon and had to kill two of these Spriggan creatures. I drew them out one at a time and basically backed through the entire dungeon while bombing them with fireballs, because I was toast the moment I got into melee, because they'd start chucking healing on themselves and drain my stats. There was no other way to get them except ranged attacks, luckily I'm a Spellsword.Cake and grief counseling will be available at the conclusion of the test. I think the best sense of scale I've gotten in the game was when I climbed all the way to Cloud Top and was still able to see the capital far-off in the middle of the valley. Really kind of breathtaking, actually.

Make the game look great on mid-level systems. Looks *awesome* now on my 9800 Pro 128meg and decent frame rates.

I just need a better video card (say a GeForce 7800 or a 6800 Ultra), an extra 512 MB of ram and I have the recommended specs. Tempting...
For about the same price I could get a 360, and Oblivion would look even better. But since I don't have an HD TV, I would have to plug it in my 17inch LCD monitor. So I would have to play Oblivion in letterbox...

For those of you that like the level scaling, try playing a bard or thief. Level up sneak, security, speechcraft, mercantile, illusion, etc first (non combat stuff). Get to level 10. Congrats, you can no longer kill a monster and the game is unplayable, period. I didn't think it was possible, but somehow Bethesda managed to break this game even more than Morrowind. At least you could play the game when you were invincible.
Having said that, I've decided to just exploit the hell out of the system and set all the skills I want to use as minor skills. This should make the game playable and that way I can enjoy the story and the graphics. The game looks amazing with the exception of a few outdoor areas and the quests/storyline are significantly improved. I'd like to actually roleplay my guy a little while I do this, but unfortunately the current system makes that impossible."Luck's last match struck in the pouring down wind." - Chris Cornell, "Mindriot"

Not sure I understand the level scaling thingie. How does it differ from Morrowind? In Morrowind, the random creatures you faced in the wilderness and dungeons also changed according to your level.Let us be lazy in everything, except in loving and drinking, except in being lazy – Lessing
