On some other board someone posted news about the game. He says the info comes from the May issue of Computer Games magazine:

The classic Duke Nukem humor is still there and so are the smoking, drinking, and the girls. They are trying to make the game as interactive as possible. They aren't just going for a physics type interactivity either. It seems you'll even be able to have Duke send you're friends an email through the game. It won't be a generic email either. You'll be able to write the message.

So that's what they have been spending all the time with... making it possible to send emails through the game..!

I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

I wonder if they also made it possible to play Duke Nukem 3D in the game

Sod that - let's have the original platformers instead.

Wasn't there already a preview a couple of years ago?

Probably, but I've never read a preview like this one... it sure has some weird stuff in it

Well, since the game isn't going to see release in my lifetime I'm not going to waste valuable time reading previews. So, if you'd care to elaborate...........

Launching the game is easy enough—just double click on the shortcut and your default browser will launch, and the game loads inside the browser window. Neat. The game uses the new < canvas > tags (as seen in this demonstration) to render the 3D game environment. Level maps work almost exactly like Google Maps, with real-time scrolling.

I had our Mac-using friends and Linux.Ars guys give the game a shot and I'm here to report that the Ruby on Rails-Ajax combo means that the game plays evenly well on all three platforms. You do need to be careful about your browser choice, though. Firefox 1.5 seemed to work best on all platforms, although I didn't have any trouble with IE 6. Opera 8.5 was a bit glitchy, with some of the dialog being rendered in what sounded like a Scandinavian accent.

                          Addendum:

2K Games has made it official: Duke Nukem Forever is alive and, well, in the hands of developer Gearbox Software, confirming our earlier reports that the Borderlands studio was helping to complete the game's absurdly long development cycle.

Yeah, it's back. Unbelievable...it's been 13 years now that it's been under development. Almost half my life!

Duke Nukem Forever Pre-order from 2001

Realistically, the game is going to suck. I'd be shocked if it's any better than Doom 3 which had stale game mechanics 5 years ago. All the modern iterations of these classic games like Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein, etc. just aren't that good because they don't want to stray from what they did in the past which doesn't cut it anymore.

Gearbox has made some good games though but they always stopped just shy of being truly innovative (Brother's in Arms: Hell's Highway was only a shadow of the game it was supposed to be and showed off in demonstration videos).

Uh... no. Doom II was like the original Doom, but Doom 3 introduced non-Doomlike stuff like NPCs and dialogues and missions and horror elements. They did that sloppily and alienated both hardcore fans and the new growth. I have no idea what Quake 4 was (will be?) like.
The DNF is going to fall into the same trap with full voiceovers and frequent cutscenes and stuff. No way this new team is going to grow some balls and release an old school shooter.
