That Spartan game has been a pretty excellent find. Unlike some of the earlier games that slitherine have done on the theme(Historic greek), this one is a real tbs game - with all the empire management you could want.

I'm two days of playing into the grand campaign, and it's proveing to be a very addicitive game, if you like historic tbs games that is

We dont do massive gift exchanges, but follow the custom of giving several small gifts to the kid for hanukkah. She got a shawl, a couple of books, a music CD. And a couple of hanukkah menorahs. And a Chinese fan from Pearl River store in NY. And what I hope is the last doll accessory. Nieces we were visiting got a doll (also from american girl place, like the above accessory) and doll clothes. Mother in law got what she wanted most - lots of lovely groceries . POTM got a book light from her aunt and uncle.

Closest thing to a game for the season was Roller Coaster Tycoon - which i got sorta for myself, sorta for POTM, but mostly cause it was there, ya know?

Was going to get POTM a board game for a sleepover the night before christmas eve (a gentile friend, which helped the friends mom do HER last minute shopping) but we didnt manage to get to the store. So we still owe her a board game.

Shes an chassidic jewish woman. She doesnt want or need useless "stuff" to clutter her place. We've gotten here kitchen gadgets in the past, which she doesnt use. Forget electronics, clothes, or jewelry.

We didnt just pay for the groceries, we went and shopped for them, and brought them upstairs, which is a big deal since she lives in a walkup (which she refuses to move from). And we were careful to get exactly the kinds she wanted - she is very picky.

This is a culture where love is often expressed through food, so this was a very nice and appreciated present.

In general I think elderly people often need more practical things like this, more than useless stuff.

But maybe this is a cultural thing - youre thinking a "christmas present" which isnt supposed to be practical, and IS supposed to be a 'thing'. Believe me, my mother in law isnt interested in christmas presents.

O'haras "Gifts of the Magi" and all that. Believe me, my mother in law isnt interested in christmas presents. And certainly not in something that has no "tachlis" (practical purpose)

                            Cultural intercommunication is always Kewl

Forgive me - when I enter or return from chassidic land, theres always an element of culture shock, and i sometime get a "nobody understands what i go through" attitude. And im just back from over a week there.

Hope you had a good holiday

@LotM, while i remember - have you tried the Spartan game(by Slitherine)? the more i'm playing it the more its reminding me of EU2, although Spartan is probably less complex in its political model? Still its full of historic events and characters, which is cool for ancient greek fans. Anyway last night as i made the EU2 comparison i thought of you and decided to give you a heads up on it

hmmm i think i need to do a write-up thread on this game, i'll play it for a few more days to see more of it before i start

Oh and if anyone is interested that Catz game is brutal - i've had to endure my gf get all worked up as her female cat became a mother on new years day, and preceded to overfeed+over pamper her son(who is now a fat git) and starve+ignore her daughter!! It was awfull hearing the pathetic mewings!
