Basically bunny hopping originated as a consequence of the way physics were handled in the early MP FPS games. If you not in contact with a surface then you don't lose your acceleration, which can build up. It turned out (in Quake for instance) that control whilst in the air also impacts upon the physics........hence the role of strafing.
The ultimate bunny hops are in QuakeWorld and particualrly CPMA (a pro mod for Q3) where air control is maxed and speeds can reach truly outrageous levels if you are skilful enough.

and in doom physics allowed shotguns to gain damage when you added velocity by turning rapidly. IIRC it was called swing shot or something. Back then when people were finding ways to enhance their plays like that were the best days of FPS IMO. Because it required players to think and experiment, like an abstract puzzle, and not expect realism to just happen like simulations.
you can see these as exploits in one way (and it is sort of true) but most of these "exploits" required you to perform it and it added depth to the gameplay. People who simply denounce it because they think its exploit, unrealistic or simply cause they cant do it... dont see that.
well those are not tactical team based MP FPS's... those are just mindless deathmatch fragfests...
so who cares?
