Sid would probably prefer to create original new games, but it's what the fans want that matters. What could Sid possibly think of that could do better than Civ, Colonization, or SMAC? His own interstellar game? A SimEarth/ SimLife type game? (hint hint)
Pirates I have no interest in, and anything else by Sid isn't interesting enough for me to be aware of.

I don't know, I'm sure he could come up with something new. I mean, I don't believe that it is impossible to create an original game these days. It's just that in terms of good business, I guess it is better to just milk a franchise that has proven itself than risk on a new concept.

In Elite2+3, i never trade in slaves - its not in my role playing abilities. And as i'd seen 'Little Big Horn'(and some other pro-native films) before playing Colonisation, i just found it difficult to play in the historicaly correct way - i never did finish the game because of that
As Brent said, if there had been the option of playing as the Native Americans, then i'd probably have seen it through to the (bitter) end
I think Fireaxis(or Sid) had said something about the possibility of a Colonisation2. I waiting for Pirates!(new version) to come out on xbox in the uk, and i'd also be interested in a new Colonisation.
Sid(mostly under the microprose label) has a wealth of classic games that it cant harm to update, atleast i hope thats the plan.'The very basis of the liberal idea – the belief of individual freedom is what causes the chaos' - William Kristol, son of the founder of neo-conservitivism, talking about neo-con ideology and its agenda for you.info here. prove me wrong.

I'd rather not see a sequel to colonization. I loved the game at the time and still do but I would rather see Firaxis try something new. "New" in the sense that Civilization and colonization where new and refeshing concepts at the time of release, 15 years ago. I find the fact that Firaxis now seems to fully rely on Sid's name and the old franchise from Microprose days disturbing. That remake strategy will keep things running for a while but to where? Civilization4? Civ5? Railroad Tycoon 4? F15 Strike Eagle 2010?
Likewise, the new & improved Pirates! isn't that new, it's a fancy and well done remake. However, it doesn't seem to add much if you played the original pirates on the Amiga. More 3D and ballroom dancing yes, but the concepts are almost the same from what I've read in the forum threads.
If I want a remake of colonization I can always get involved in some of the open source projects like Freecol http://www.freecol.org/Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

take the first word of each sentence quite a good poem all said and done.
@CapTVK, i hear what your saying, and from that viewpoint i would agree.
The other viewpoint is that there are plenty of companies out there making new types of games, or just rehashing the same themes as is most often the case.
I read a few threads in various places that were discussing lack of innovation etc, and i'm sort of the opinion that it is much harder to come up with completely new and origonal idea's that work well and are succesfull these days.
Partly because i suppose, in a fundemental way, you can only interact with a graphic+sound effect(+now rumble pack) in so many ways.
Think of all the different types of games you've played over the years, and think of the ones that really stick out in your mind as being the cream of the crop.
Civ is definately in that list. And i guess for many of us games like Pirates!,F15(although i preferd Solo Flight),Silent Hunter,Xcom etc are probably in that list also. They just happen to be under the Microprose label.
I think i can live with seeing remakes of the great classic games of compting.
What distresses me more in seeing a whole raft of FPS military clones that get spewn out in a seemingly ever increasing rate. Does each new one add anything really great to the genre? Why are the games companies so obsessed with all this war stuff other than they are forced to produce whatever sells best, to recoup the millions each one costs to make. Why are we gamers seemingly happy to lap them up? I dont know.
Imho I could live with a Colonisation2(or even 3 maybe), or Civ4 etc in our particular games market as it currently stands. Just no more war based FPS pleaseLast edited by child of Thor; April 2, 2005, 16:20.'The very basis of the liberal idea – the belief of individual freedom is what causes the chaos' - William Kristol, son of the founder of neo-conservitivism, talking about neo-con ideology and its agenda for you.info here. prove me wrong.
