But we are all hardened gamers Adagio, we need to get the opinion of a 13 year old who played Doom 3 as his first fps.

You're kind of right. But even expecting it you get a few scares, and even when you know they are there blasting away in the dark in the approximate vicinity of the enemy not knowing whether they might be right next to you is quite unsettling. It's obvious (to me anyway) they made the torch function the way it did for effect, even though it was rather silly.Originally posted by Adagio
Just because it's dark doesn't mean it's scary. After a few minutes of play you quickly learn when to expect an enemy so if a creature jumps out of the dark it's not suprising

Atmosphere? Of course, you needed to, err, prepare to be scared when playing the game. I don't think Doom3 or any game for that matter can scare you if you're playing in the middle of the day and with the mindset to have some quick fun. Then it won't work. But if you actually knew it's supposed to be a horror game, and therefore played it with a good sound system, late at night with low lights, it's scarier.Originally posted by Adagio
Other things? I can't think of anything else about Doom3 that could be scary
I will soon complete Doom3 for the third time. I remember 85% of the times when monsters jump out at you. I still get scared by some of the atmospheric places in the game and, most of all, the sounds.
BTW, Doom2 seemed scary in its time, too

I tried it late at night with low lights and was ready for a horror game and whatever else I could do, but it just didn't make much difference compared to if I played it in daylight
I've always been hard to scare though

. Doom3 had some things that appeal to me a lot... any mention of an ancient civilization makes me happy, and I've always liked when mystical elements are portrayed. The voices, screaming and such in Doom3 was what scared me, plus the additional effect of all the blood and whatever.
But yes, I guess that there are people who are not scared by horror games and such things. I know because I'm not scared by horror movies. In that case, enjoy Doom3 as a classic retro FPS. It's still damn good as that, too.Solver, WePlayCiv Co-Administrator

I find most horror movies rather boring, as they're too similar, although some are good. But none are scary, agreed.
The background sounds, yup, great... not only the evil voices, also the thumping sounds, the humming sounds, and the one I liked the best was I can't even understand what, something slightly similar to a chorus.Solver, WePlayCiv Co-Administrator
