Only now do we have the graphical technology to even think about doing horses and such.

So there's no reason to complain about them in older rpg's. But I expect rpg's in the future to have them.
Um... If I recall correctly the TES: Arena had horses. And houses you could buy too. Of course that game was in VGA (1st person though). It was done.

And I agree... HORSES (at least it'll provide more PWNing oppertunities over UR ). I hope the new TES (Oblivion) includes them. They have a few prelim screenies with characters on horses. And allow exotic mounts as well as ordinary, wandering the countryside mounts (of course the wild ones aren't as good as the exotic ones... and maybe some haven't been broke ).

Oh, as for too much dialogue... GIVE ME MORE! I want Planescape: Torment like dialogue. Give me a freaking book in the game! I want to drawn into the gameworld, not just be told go there and do X for me because I said so because I'm the next quest giver!

That would be the reason why we wont see it. It would probably at least double the cost to make the movie because of all the extra scenes, but in cases like "Diary of a Hitman"* where production cost wasn't high while there were no stupid-looking explosions or zombies or whatever... low cost movies like this should be possible to have several choices during the movie without killing the budget

*For those who doesn't know the movie: 75% of the movie was filmed in the same small apartment and was mostly just dialoge, while they still managed to make it somewhat interesting
This space is empty... or is it?

More effort/detail on the game world and characters in it and game balance.

imho we are seeing games becoming "interactive movies" and the interactive bit is questionable at times.

If i want to watch a movie i go to the cinema. when i play games i want to really interact with the game, not be herded like a sheep down a track?

        something like that

Oh yeah and more bl**dy horses, in everything
of course in the case of Knights of the Old republic, the interactive fiction is better than the last Star Wars movies.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is better than the Phantom Menace, so that's hardly a tough one Diss.

Oooh, the very hungry caterpillar was one of the BEST kids books, we read it to POTM so often, i can probably recite it - on sunday, the caterpillar was sick, he ate a leaf, and he felt better, or something like that.

Much better than the very lonely firefly, for example.

            Any games based on TVHC?

              Quick question:

              Who's POTM?

                    yes it's true

I'm just glad I'm not one of those geeks who waited in line for weeks. They sure must of felt ripped off.

I knew it would be bad, I didn't see it until it came out on video.

Another very strange design decision is items you can carry is neither limited by mass nor volume but by slot.
In NetHack, you get burdened and ecentually overtaxed so mass and volume do matter. The slot limitation vs. volume is certainly mostly historical since 1 letter = 1 item.

I think the randomness of roguelikes is a big part of what makes them fun (though I hate the infinite dungeon ones like zangband).

Less graphics, no sound, more dialogues and more choices and different paths to tread in RPG's are what I want. Give me a game where you start in different locations based on your chosen background, where the initial quests are different based on your character creation choices, where the mid and late game quests vary based on the choices you made (good/evil, tech/magic...) during the game, and where you can solve every quest in any one of three ways: talking, fighting or sneaking. This requires more dialogues, by the way (not monologues from the NPC part).

I'm convinced that with bad graphics, no sound, and tons of script, that a (modern) RPG would not do well.

I think this is doing pretty well.

but that uses the ultimate in graphics. Something that can far surpass any supercomputer. The imagination.

You didn't really play with the horses ... they took you from one area to another, but you had no control over the horse at all (you just pointed to which area you wanted to go and it went there). From what I recall anyway, it's been about ten years.

Given how popular the pack animals were after the expansions, at least among people I know, i'd be surprised if they're not in it in some way (either as pack animals or mounted play). Also, the focus on bow combat means that they should definitely include some sort of mounted archery and can easily do so... not sure how mounted HTH combat will go though, although it should increase the utility of polearms hopefully
