I'm convinced that with bad graphics, no sound, and tons of script, that a (modern) RPG would not do well.
It would certainly not sell well, but I would certainly like it. Graphics tend to run badly on machines which are not modern and I don't upgrade my machine that often. Good graphics tend to hinder gameplay if you don't have the top-notch machine, and I think they add little to nothing to the game.
By no sound, I mean be able to play without sounds (thus subscripts, tuitorials that aren't only given by voice...).
Without scripts and dialogues, you turn RPGs into action games or shooters.

Um, Tribunal. It's actually a pack rat ... not worth much but it's cute and follows you around.

But sometimes it has problems in following you, damn pack horse .

This thread is weird. I can see how horses would be a welcome addition to a game like, say, Baldur's Gate.

They would, however, be a very odd feature in Need For Speed. When you make claims like that, please elaborate a little, for the sake of my hangover

must of missed it. I found some fighter type character outside in the courtyard. I hired him. He sucked. He eventually was killed by dark brotherhood assassins. I couldn't care enough to save him.

Actually one time I did reload to save him- the dumbass got stuck underwater and drowned. . I really didn't think an AI character could drown. That's what he gets for following me into an hard to reach underwater area.

As long as they don't prance too much

Hmmm. Depends on the game. This type of area-specific damage can essentially lead to "insta-death". If your character can barely walk after being shot in the leg, then he's toast most likely. There has to be a way of addressing that occurence, otherwise your game will be VERY frustrating to players. Imagine this: I'm hit in the leg. Now I'm laying on the ground since I can't move. I'm dead. Games stick with the "health-bar" because it gives much more freedom in determining gameplay. Developers don't have to worry about how your character can heal specific wounds and having to put hidey-holes for you to splint your broken leg. Much easier to let the players find the "healing potion / first-aid kit / bandages / hamburger" and bye-bye damage. It allows you greater lattitude in level design, AI (imagine having enemies follow your blood-trail, you'd be toast if you ever got touched).

                      Horses

I love this idea. I'd love to have mounted characters and enemies in D&D type games.

Great idea. However you're toast if caught tired while someone is aiming at you with a mouse.

Yes, often you can just click, press space or press ESC to end the video, but why do you have to do that every time? Why don't they just have a "show startup video = false" in the ini file? And why is it sometimes it's not possible to avoid seeing the video?
Being forced to see the EA logo everytime I start some EA game only have a negative effect (for each time I see it I hate EA even more)
At least one game (CTP2) has this feature, but undocumented. I suspect that this is true of many games, simply because the games designers have to go through the game startup sequence very frequently, and are liable to get rather frustrated in the same way.

This was done in the original Tomb Raider, though primitively (only when diving)
Later Tomb Raider games introduced stamina for running too (that's the faster sprinting-type running, not the default jogging-type running, which can be done indefinately).

The short answer is that yes, it is surprisingly hard to implement. I've created Doom levels, and it's astonishing how many changes I had to make to make them work properly in coop. There are simply vastly more possibilities in coop play that it is very hard to take into account when designing, and the more complex (or more realistic) the games become, the more true that is.

Nevertheless, I like coop, and I also wish more games featured it.
