Has anyone tried playing as Seleucid Empire? The biggest problem there is you start with no heavy armoured cavalry (I forgot the name) while Armenia and Parthia start with a few units of those. Second problem: Their horse archers can hit your units and your horse javelin throwers can't hit their horse archers at the same range.

It seems that attacking Egypt early is the most promising thing to do, as well as building city walls around your cities and heaps of infantry. The problem is they still attack smaller cities. I guess you should just live with that and plunder Egypt while you can.

    Anyone has any insight?

Yeah, well, I used to be on the RTR team, and the guy that runs it tends to be a little too optimistic (and then a little too demanding when his unrealistic deadlines were missed). So I disappeared for awhile and now I'm just working on The First Triumvirate mod(s) with a team of realists.

Anyway, at least stuff is coming out that makes us forget the lousy vanilla game.

I liked the selucids a lot since they have a good variety of units and lots of money. I hired a lot of mercs including beduin archers early on and used chariots to counter any flanking enemy cav.

I'll have to check that out. I'm reading about it on the Total War Center forums, and it looks awesome

the thing about all those modded units and stuff is that often they are not compatible with eachother, and it's sometimes a bit complicated to juggle with them (removing this, adding that etc)

i've had things installed that made my game crash or that didn't work (i probably installed them the wrong way )
and it's a bit sluggish to switch from this mod to the other imo

PS: it is indeed unfortunate that the vanilla game was released like it was... It has so much more potential! And why use the silly units like gladiators and similar crap.. It feels like a game that's not finished

You think the gladiator units were bad? Go to the link below and click on the "3D Unit Profile" link to see the latest abomination.

I just found it out It's too late
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

                    • i'm trying your triumvirate mod right now...
the spelling errors are awful though, I don't understand why you didn't check that out!

it's also the first time i play with legionary cohorts etc... I never finished a game till marian reforms rofl

game got boring before I got there mostly... always the same battles... enemies spamming troops with me always in dire need of gold, but always winning my battles nevertheless. problem was expanding quickly
expanding slowly and gradually got a bit repetitive after a while

                          • Traianvs, thanks for the feedback. I wasn't actually involved in TFT v1.5/6; I did the original release. Your concerns are noted (especially the spelling errors - crap like that bugs me). I think we're going to build v2.0 directly on vanilla RTW (as opposed to building on RTR)... and hopefully improve all aspects of the gameplay for those that want a post-Marian Reform experience. I'd be happy to see anymore feedback.
