  • I've been playing (and modding) RTW again. Being a Roman history fan, it's the one game I keep coming back to.

A lot of the expansion changes can be modded into the original game, which is nice - night battles, loyalty, etc. I'm also helping test what will probably end up being my favorite RTW mod (with my own TFT mod coming in a close second ). It's called Arthurian: Total War - the map is changed to focus on England, Ireland and part of France. The units are all new and reflect the historic units available in the area in 480AD. Very cool thus far. It's a closed beta test, but keep an eye out for the public version to get some more milage out of RTW. Their forum:
A barbarian Invasion mod- the mod focuses on Northern Gaul and Britain staring date 481 AD and it will end in the VIIIth or late VIIth century.

Just takes a little bit of modding:

How to add night battles to the Imperial Campaign It is a while since I did this so I might have missed some stuff. Also I am using RTW:BI 1.6. Your mileage may vary if you don't have BI installed and patched. Let me know how it goes if you use this howto. There are five steps to adding night battles to the Imperial Campaign. 1. Activate night battles in the campaign. 2. Add night battle character traits. 3. Add torches to units etc. (optional) 4. Add lighting for night time.

Me too. I think Civ4 is a great game but the combat is annoying (and now more critical than ever). I got rid of BI since it was too annoying and tried RTR. I wasnt impressed with that either but of course it was based on the 1.2 version (which was crap) and doomed to failure. I'm now playing a 1.5 version (with the player1 fixer) campaign and I just dont think its great. It may be false memories but I think 1.3 was better. There are just so many critical gameplay issues with RTR that I find myself wondering just how bad (or good) MTW2 will be.
We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI

              • There was one major problem with 1.3 of the RTW game that broke things for me: it screwed up Roman diplomacy. In my first 1.3 campaign, playing the Scipiones, I had taken Halicarnassus, while Sardis was still held by the Seleucids. The Seleucids were allied with the Bruti, and they attacked me. In normal circumstances, since there are alliances both ways (Scipiones-Bruti and Bruti-Seleucids) the attacker would have broken his alliance. Instead, the game broke the Scipiones-Bruti alliance and along with it, the SPQR-Scipiones and Julii-Scipiones alliances. I quit at that point and didn't play again until 1.5 was released.

It could look that way, but Freud wasn't involved (and you leave my sex life out of it) . It's just an example of me leaving out a few details ie. I stopped playing RTW to play civ4 but have gone back to RTW.

Me too! I actually had to buy it again when I got back to modding the game. True - the AI leaves something to be desired. But TFT makes up for it in various ways ( ) and ATW is fun no matter what if you like stuff in the Warlords Chronicles vein. But I know how choosy you can be (no offense intended) so maybe any RTW mod just won't do it for you.
