as fra as the fun of the combat: (I have played FFXI, CoH, AO, and EQ2)
1. CoH
2. EQ2
3. AO
4. FFXI
Items:
1. EQ2
2. AO
3. FFXI
4. CoH
Quests:
1. EQ2
2. FFXI
3. AO
4. CoH (this might be expanded now, I played for less than a month)
Player Interaction
1. AO
2. EQ2
3. CoH
4. FFXI (not being able to choose your server, and than having to buy a linkshell, were real pains in the ass, good PvP is also needed (only AO has))
I should mention on this last one that AO is head and shouldiers above the competition. EQ2 has fairly minimal (although I haven't expereinced everything).

There's no real reason to PvP, the "war" doesn't make sense.
Admittedly much of the real PvP stuff is listed under the "coming soon" section of Blizzard's site. But it's hardly meaningless.
Arenas are places where players can meet up to battle in pre-arranged PvP battles which would be suited for guild vs guild combat. There are actually 2 known arena spots, one is located in Orgrimmar, the other in Stranglethorn Vale, near Grom'gol. These areas are currently designated to be Free For All (FFA) areas where anyone may attack any other person regardless of faction.
With pre-arranged battles, gamers in the world will be able to purchase tickets to watch arena battles, a feature that was revealed at E3 2003, but currently not complete.
PvP Rewards have not been implemented in game yet. However, the following information is known about them and we hope they will be implemented soon.
While engaging in PvP combat, there are two types of kills, honourable and dishonourable kills. Kills that are honourable are of those that are near your level and higher. Currently, only killing Faction NPCs give honourable kills.
Based on the amount of honour points accumulated, not only will players gain a military title, there is also a special PvP team tabard and players will gain discounts from your faction's NPC vendors which includes equipment such as cloaks, rings, armor, and weapons.
Players with high ranks will also become officers with officer tabards and access to the special officer's barracks. The barracks will enable you to buy rare items and players might even gain access to special mounts and items of epic quality.
For further prestige you could even gain the title of City Protector for your racial capital and gain the ability to teleport to your home city at will.
Special zones will soon be available in the game world which are always set to PvP and allow players to engage in fair combat against players in a similar level range. These zones are not restricted to the PvP servers but they will also appear on the PvE servers as contested territories.
These Battleground zones also feature quests with greater rewards due to the increased danger. If the commander of an enemy town dies, the town becomes "razed" and honour points are added to your teams score.
Siege weaponry has been a popular topic of discussion and although this has yet to be implemented and we are looking to add the feature after the game has launched. Once added, players will have to not only finish off any NPCs but actually destroy all the buildings.
Entrances to Battlegrounds are marked by red portals, much like the blue instance portals to group instances. There are currently 2 red portals sighted on the edge of Hillsbrad Foothills and Alterac Moutains although they currently do nothing at the moment. It is speculated that each entrance will be used by one faction to enter the battleground.
As for it being the most varied, I think Anarchy Online has randomly generated missions with their own (randomly generated) areas.
Oh, you can't be serious. I played Anarchy Online for months, they were the same thing with random names and locations...

I've played the game a lot now (L33 Human Paladin, L14 Dwarf Hunter), and I don't have any issues with the quests. I welcome your input for more variation...
I've had quests where I've had to go assassinate people. I've had escort quests. I've had "so and so is lost, go find them" quests. I've had "kill X many things" quests. I've had "bring me X many heads" quests. I've had "bring me these ingredients so I can make something for you" quests. I've had "make me this thing" quests. etc.
What else could they add to improve it?

yeah, that is why AO scored so low for me for quests
same for CoH )because the ShadowLand quests aren't like that)

I've got a 43 Troll Shaman on Bronzebeard. I also have a a large number of alts - in fact all classes except warlock and all races except gnome. All are above lvl10 and 4 (including my Shaman) are above lvl20.
So far I've found Shaman and Mage to be the most fun classes, but that's just my playstyle.
The PvP situation needs a little fixing IMO. I really like this game, but it's hella annoying when some ******* who's 30 levels higher than you (I'm 23 and he was 50 something) just camps in a wilderness area killing people who don't yet have the ability to fight back. Even worse, this jackass would camp at your corpse so if you respawned he'd just kill you again. This guy was really a piece of work too, because he ran away the second someone even close to his level came by.
It was obviously a little kid doing it, or someone with no self esteem, but it still shouldn't be happening. They need to introduce that system where it's dishonorable to kill people who are significantly lower level then you, unless you're attacked first.

You dont want me to respond, do you
Comparing a PC to going out to a movie isnt really accurate. The movie theater provides the place, the equipment, does the work of getting the thing running, etc. Thats why going to the movies is more expensive than renting a DVD.
Renting a DVD would be more comparable, since you provide your own equipment, etc. At that rate, about $1 per hour of entertainment seems fair.
So a $50(US) game that provides say 50 hours game play sound about right. A bargain bin diver and all around cheapskate lie myself pays rather less than that, but foregoes certain benefits.
For an MMORPG youve got $15 a month over and above the price of the game. Thats clearly justifiable if you play it alot, but hardly sounds like a great bargain, unless you eat, sleep and breathe the game (which, i suppose, some people do)

Well if you are aiming for $1 an hour with $50 and $15 then you only need 95 hours over 3 months, which is hardly living and breathing the game. If you played for a year at a cost of $230 then you only need 230 hours.

I hate the kill X many things quests. That's what really put me off on Everquest 2. Lame. It's things like that why I don't consider it a real role playing game.

I didnt say you had live and breath the game for it to be worthwhile at a dollar an hour, i said you had to live and breathe the game for it to be a BARGAIN.
Quibble, quibble, quibble, quibble.
And yes, it becomes more reasonable the more months you play, since you are "amortizing" the game price over more months, and the cost approaches the monthly fee.
However if you buy a conventional game for $50, and you playit for 95 hours over 3 months, thats less than 30 cents per hour. Rather more of a bargain. And lots of folks think $50 is a high price for a game. And, for the most part, you can get pretty recent games for signigicantly less (Im talking 6 month old games for $30, not my abacus games for $5)
Assuming you play it for 3 months, thats $95. The only conventional games that cost that much are some of the most expensive war games - i think War in the Pacific may have been close to that. And that was huge game, and one most people who buy it will play for longer than 3 months. Hell, i think they have to go longer than 3 months to finish it once.

The thing about MMORPGs is that you don't finish them, they keep changing (last WoW patch had a few new dungeons already). Also the cinema thing is moreapt than you realise as they provide the servers and bandwidth to run on. Most other online games will run on individuals servers.
Not only do they provide the servers & bandwidth, but they actively develop, maintain, and provide new content and quests all the time.
