The dancing is not mandatory, you can skip it if you like and it won't have too big an impact on the game. The same can be said for many things in Pirates!.

I shouldn't have gotten this, now I'm torn between HL2 and this.
Cake and grief counseling will be available at the conclusion of the test. Thank you for helping us help you help us all!

Thanks for the input on dancing, fellows.

It's frustrating when I purchase a game only to find that spoken dialogues or whatever are critical to playing and there's no subtitles or anything like that. It's extremely difficult to persuade the store to take back the game due to concerns of people making illegal copies or whatnot.

I can remember playing the original night after night on my C64 while in elementry school. Of course that was when Pirates! was considered state of the art. I'm glade to see a new edition has come out and I plan on picking up a copy tomorrow.

Reading this thread a day or so ago, the dancing part seemed off-putting. Recent posts have restored my interest.
But I'd still like to see a bit of the game.
Is there a demo out there?

They introduced dancing mini game to make the charm trait more appealing. In the original game it was next to useless.

Please note that I haven't played the game yet and these are my observations based on my experience with the original game and what you have posted in this thread.

Shame they didn't include the sea battle mini-game. Even though I always tended to avoid attacking like that, still, with favourable wind, it had a few applications.

I think you are correct. In the original, the player did not have much control over winning the daughter's heart. The dance mini-game gives the player more control over whether or not you successfully win the lady's heart. And the charm trait along with the special shoes item give the player a real measureable bonus in that mini-game.

I think that is why they also added the sneaking in and out of town mini-game. In the original game that was simply a roll of the dice. The dancing and the sneaking in and out of town mini-games eliminate some randomness and give the player more control over the outcome.

Well, the turn based battles are so very good that you really don't need a sea battle against cities.
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

                    It's a conspiracy .

Damn... 64 MB VRam to play this game . I need a new computer. Funny that a Sid Meier game is making me do that.

                        • Cavalry is brutal in those battles with big cities though. Cavalry can tear all of your units to shreds in the open.

Yep, that's what I'm going to have to do.

                              • I haven't really gotten a chance to play Pirates much, but on first impression it seems rather easy and lame - little more than a collection of simple mini-games.
