As an aside - Yay! I can finally play this on XP. My original version wasn't able to run but thanks to the underdogs fulfilling that vital function of supplying repaired files, after the companies that make certain games stop living up to the obligations in their EULA's, I can play it again.

Laser rifle and heavy laser are good cash makers. And laser rifles are good weapons.

That tree doesn't look right. How the heck are the plasma weapons all on separate branches?

Maybe you just need a weapon to start researching it. Seems like what I remember from the game.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

I was able to start research it as soon as I recovered some rifles.

I didn't even have any of the first 3 techs discovered.

            ACK!

Does that mean you know how to use the weapons but not how to make them?>

You may be able to build them, but you can definately use the weapons after researching them (and their clips). Also I think you can use weapons you have researched when captured off aliens even if you have yet to research their clips.

Don't listen to all these cheaters. There's only one way to defeat the alien aggression, and that's with large numbers of unarmored soldiers armed with Rifles and grenades.

No, not really. But when you've mastered this excellent game, that's fun too.

(actually, a friend of mine tried to win the game without using any developed weapon at all. But he failed as in the end when you go in to kill the aliens brain, you have to use something better. So he had to pick one up from a dead alien and fired a salvo to finish the game...)

yeah, i've heard of some sickos who play games in self-handicapped mode. someone for example is playing UFO:Afthermath (the newest game) with just 2 (!!!) soldiers!

maybe i should inform at this position, that on the medium skill level in the later game, that when i attacked alien bases, i usually lost at least 4 soldiers before managing to fire the first shots. mainly because they come from every angle and even preemptive handgranades won't do the job.
when at least one survived, you could always heal the others... but with just 2 players??? OMG!

Oh yeah, makes me think of my first City terror mission in old UFO; I was a tad scared about it as a friend that got the game before me said they were really hard. So I'm really careful and all. In the first round I've placed my 8 soldiers (don't ask me I didn't have more - I don't know) around the ramp, on their knees and covering all angles. perfect i thought and ended the turn. Then, the only thing I see is some little round, dark object that falls down from the sky. KA-BLAAM! And that was the end of that mission...

All this talk caused me to blow the dust off my floppy disks and re-install the game. This is still a great game, but it's hard to play in short sessions (30-60 minutes). Maybe it's just me, but it takes me a long time to play out the battlescape screens, and I keep finding myself having to abandon the game in the middle of a battle. Looks like I'll have to save this one for a business trip...
