  • I remember having a "demolition squad" in Apocalypse that would specialize in explosives. I'd do alot of fun things like go around a building and planting high explosives at all the major supports with a synchronized explosion time. They'd set them all down, step back, and *boom* the entire office complex is a pile of rubble I would then just have to clean up any aliens that survived the collapse or that where luck enough to get stuck in a mysterious floating room that survived.

    • In Apoc that was a good way to conduct economic warfare, especially in the high-rise slum building. Alas that a factions available fundage had no effect on anything whatsoever.

One hint for terror missions: If you have stun weapons, stun any civilians you find. Aliens don't attack stunned civilians and they count as saved in your end-score. Of course, that prevents you using explosive weaponry near the civilians, but on the other hand explosive weaponry near fully conscious civilians does not work too well either.

Preceding speaker does not know what he's talking about (not that I could read it as he's on my ignore list). The vital ammo to use includes incendiary and high explosive. Your soldiers lifes are worth so much more than the civilians (40k a piece)*. They might turn into Chryssalids if you let them live. They should have thought about the risks before moving to an alien terror-target.

        * But they are not worth that much. If you're affraid over what you're going to meet inside a ship it might be worth it to send in a soldier of the CF-class (Cannon Fodder) with a laser pistol in one hand and a primed proximity grenade in the other. good way to deal with ships where there's two roads to the center. Like for example the early standard cross-shaped small ship that can really be a graveyard for rookies.

        • Oh god, not the cross shaped ship. I usually enter by having someone from the CF class ( ) popping through the door. If he's not killed, he'll walk to the wall next to the door and kneel down, and the rest of the team scurries in to cover the inside doors from the far wall next to Mr. Redshirt. I usually lose more people to a single alien emerging from the reactor room in the middle of those ships than in any other ship in the game.

Btw, if a stunned civilian wakes up, they'll be considered hostile and you'll have to kill them to wrap things up. Civilians killed by your operatives give a big negative score, so I only deal with them if Chryssalids are around. It's tricky business in that case to leave the site with a positive score, but hey, at least you got some loot in the process.

          • Obviously if it is a choice between a soldier and a civilian/alien combo dying, my soldier will be sending flowers to the civilian's family after the battle is over. But AP will take an alien down without killing a nearby civilian, assuming your soldier can aim decently.

            • IIRC, different aliens are vulnerable to different kinds of ammo, but I could never figure out the chart.

I think the "cross-shaped" ship is a terror ship - though you only need to be really careful when you see Snakemen about.

              • Skankers - not sure if you're talking about APocalypse here, but in the versions of UFO I've played, stunned civilians count as dead in the end stats, unless they recover before the end. Same with my men.

And UR - yes you could throw the High Explosive packs as you could grenades, although I guess it shouldn't be as far..... in REALITY in the game though, they were one of the greatest weapons you could have, as I never noticed any difference in distance between how far you could throw these packs and normal grenades, and they packed a lot more whallop!

In Aftermath however, the high-explosive pack equivalents can only be placed.

                      • I had to turn my firewall off temporarily to initiate the download.

Well, I've started my first game now. Sold off all weapons except the autocannons, bought a heap more of them. Also bought a rocket launcher HWP and an avenger missile launcher for my inteceptor. Hired two more soldiers and quite a number of scientists. Started building a large radar, general stores, alien containment and living quarters.

Changed the cannon on the inteceptor immediately to an avalanche while the other inteceptor was left on active duty. Not that it mattered, the refit was complete well before a ufo turned up.

I was worried that building those facilities this early was a waste, but I have already hit the living quarters limit and have captured some live aliens. Base storage should not be a problem for a while and of course the radar will help immensely. The medikit has been researched and put into production for profit, researching plasma rifles now. More engineers will be hired once the new living quarters are completed.

I have almost reached February. UFO 1 was shot down and my lifted off from base just moments before a shipment of weapons arrived. I attacked the ufo with 8 armed soldiers and 2 soldiers who just stood around. No deaths. UFO 2 succeeded in its flyby mission. Terror Mission #1 occured, but this time I had my HWP and 10 armed soldiers with HE ammo loaded. No deaths on my side but unfortunately 6 civlian deaths. One caused by me. Fortunately the civilians I did manage to save brought my mission score up from 0 to 90, so funding countries are happy. Now UFO 3 has been spotted on the ground and my inteceptor is hovering over it while the skyranger slowly moves on its way. Alas, this will be a night mission.

My mistake perhaps. I was sure it also worked in UFO. Well, TFTD.

It's in the Ufopaedia. Off hand I can remember that Cyberdiscs are resistant to explosives. Reapers are vulnerable to lasers.

AFAIk the terror ships are two storey thinguses with two "pylon"-like parts jutting from the lower part. I'm talking about the ships that really are shaped like a cross.
