There are a few RTS campaigns that allows you to win/lose/complete different objectives. But none were like as non-linear as wing commander.

Some older war games were much like Wing Commander. Kinda like Tank Platoon where you had offensives/defensives against the soviets based on what you previously did. Wing Commander unfortunantly got fairly horribly linear as the series went on too.

Sewers. Every game has to have sewers. Seriously. Try to think of an action game that doesn't have sewers. It's quite difficult, isn't it? In the real world, sewers are undergound pipe systems that take effluent out of our homes and places of business. You certainly wouldn't want to hang about in them due to the overwhelming stench, pitch blackness and claustrophobic lack of space.

In the game world it's the exact opposite. Sewers are gigantic cathedral-like vaults - often more impressive than the city above. Within the sewers there are often secret labs, religious cults, military bases, gigantic waterfalls, lost cities, alien outposts, portals to the underworld; you name it, it's there. Hell, the sewer is often the best place to meet people. And of course, only the very choicest items can be found there.
Believe it or not, many european sewers actually are that large

Italian catacombs... french sewers, etc... heck, even london sewers and NY are that large, I believe... at least they're large enough to house the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles... maybe not cathederals, but enough for reasonably comfortable movement

Funny you should mention that issue. Have you ever played Homeworld? Awesome game... let's you do just that - carry your forces from one encounter to the next throughout the game.

Depends on the game. There are RP-devoid "RPG's" such as Diablo and there are more RP-like "RPG's" like KOTOR, the NWN campaigns, or Morrowind.

Of course, even the best of single-player RP games (such as KOTOR) with phenomenally good writing don't typically have as much actual role-playing (if that's your thing) as you can accomplish with RP-dedicated online persistent worlds or MMORPG's. Of course, most such MMORPG's and persistent worlds are as devoid of RP as the various SP games (often even more so...), but there are a few gems out there if that's what you're into.

If I had to recommend the top place to find truly RP-dedicated environments, I'd say you should check out the various servers listed under "Role Play" in the NWN server list you get in Game Spy. Most of them are pretty strict about RP being an element of gameplay (so called "power gamers" are even kicked and banned by some of them).

Youre playing naval games? Harpoon? How do you unlock a cruiser (IE a CG)? How about you unlock a battleship (BB) or a carrier (CV)?
