    Nothing's wrong with Risk's campaign.

What about Morrowwind? Seems nonlinear to me... but mind you I haven't played it.

Sid Meiers Gettysburg has a non linear campaign - which scen you get is dependent on whether you won or lost the previous scen. Of course you dont carry your troops with you, as each scen as a small pieces of the larger battle, in which many more troops are engaged.

In Panzer General and other 5 star general series, you have a non-linear campaign, and do carry your non-core units with you.

The problem with RTS nonlinearity's that most of the game would be exceedingly boring.

This isn't always the case, but there is generally less storyline or scripted events with less linearity.

                Kinda by definition...

That doesn't make it exceedingly boring, though, IMO.

It does to the people who generally like story driven games though.

I like it when it's not story driven, then you can create your own story, like in SimYouNameIt
This space is empty... or is it?

                    • Yeah pay £30, then write the game yourself. Great stuff.

                      • Then you can have unlimited stories, instead of just one (often) boring story

                        • Ok send me £30 and I'll send you a game I just made. You'll love it, since you have to supply a lot (actually almost all) of the content yourself. Hours of fun, for only £30!

You're right... at least many non-linear games designed for one player would be boring. But there are occasional gems such as "Pirates!" (orginial) - I loved that game waaaay back then. Koei had this terrific game for SNES - "Uncharted Waters". It was nonlinear but tons of fun.

On other hand, some games just suck. Like that Ultima game (first one I think) for NES - I didn't like it very much, probably because designers made everything so damn expensive so it took forever to get anywhere.

no you write the story yourself. the game != the story, obviously.

                                Like in Simcity. Or Civ.
