It is amusing how I was writing a reply to that very question as you were writing it.
A conundrum remains, however, where that reply went to.

So, did the guy who won the fight above win the final?
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

Thought that it wasnt necessary to dive deep into 3S strategy in poly.

So, did the guy who won the fight above win the final?

He (Daigo) beat the guy (Justin) in semi final easily. However he faced his old rival (KO) in the finals and lost. Daigo also lost to KO last year as well, so it seems like the Street FIghter 3 event is pretty much dominated between Daigo and KO.

Well at least Daigo went back to japan with some 2nd place cash prize...

Oh and other first prize money that he earned in other events too.........

fighter community is HUGE but doesnt have that much sunday gamers. Its either you love it or not. And unlike FPS and RTSes, online fighting gaming isnt viable, so if you play it, you're mostly likely from urban/city area that has one of those ghetto arcades in the slums that still attracts ALOT of players.

Amount of prize money given for evo2004 total = 20,000+ .... not bad eh?

Why can't you play fighting games online? Surely the lag is as manageable as in FPS games.

Timing is too key. I think the host would win 4 times out of 5 in an even matchup.

But how much data can there be to send in a two player fighting game? I can't imagine lag being noticeble to anyone with broadband...

And if they made fighting games a bit more realistic (a bit slower) it wouldn't hurt that much I guess... by realistic I mean adding stuff like stamina (that's the correct word right?) or something...
This space is empty... or is it?

People regularly play online through arcade emulators, with broadband obviously.

there are slower paced games. But if its slow its too easy as you have more time to react... and people can already react and counter rediculously at this level already.... thats why more fans are pushing for faster speed to test their reflex and i guess that can alienate people who are just starting... and most fighting games are at realistic speed. quick jabs are quick enough and strong windup punches are slow enough.

But how much data can there be to send in a two player fighting game? I can't imagine lag being noticeble to anyone with broadband...
i dunno how much data it would be, but timing is crucial. To have everything synced perfectly is hard. And most games run in 60 frames per second. There are some game decisions that are made within 2-3/60th of a second. Those things will impact the game big time if its a matter of you being able to block after a small stun period.

there are some glitches that require less than 5/60th, or even the smallest unuit... the 1/60th of a second execution.... those things will be impossible to do with lag.

FPS is much more tolerant on lag, but even high tourney games are played on LAN.... mainly for cheats, but at least they play on minimal lag setting....

ive seen arcade emulators that you can play online. And its pretty good on lag.. Although the above problem still persists so you cant perform anything JF (Just frame) like consistently. Although I dont have any controllers or sticks for PCs, I heard you can easily get a converter to usb.

so except for the small lag, you can still enjoy online fighting if you want.

im really cruious as to how DOA:U and SF:aniversarry versions are going to be able to handle online play. Im crossing my fingers that it isnt going to be anything like Capcom VS SNK2....

Playing this on-line would be difficult indeed. I see a tactic that would imvolve rushing your opponent while there would be no response from him.

In the same as camping isn't a really good tactic in fps games.
Your own reaction time + net-time = dead.
Therefore who ever is able to make the first moves wins as the othe is will always be running behind the facts.

It's the same with FPS though, and it works. With a good connection and sub 40 ping it plays no differently from LAN.

in case noone knows about capcom vs snk2 situation, its classic problem of lag going horrible wrong.

In capcom VS SNK 2, character can roll around. they are invulnerable to attack for duration while they rolll, but as a penalty they have vulnerable period afterward while they are still finishing a rolling period. rolls are a very good defensive tool because your opponent will miss an attack. Already good enough for it to be somewhat of a difficult defensive maunver to punish.

When the game lags like in xbox live however, its impossible to punish an opponent rolling because its hard to hit them during the short vulnerability period. The result is everyone just rolling around abusing the slight lag masking their vulnerability and taking full advantage of the roll's benefit hoping opponent will make a mistake.....
