I got progressively more tired of playing with 14 year olds who only knew how to scream things I can't actually post here (maybe I'm generalizing, though; they very well may have been 25 year olds who only knew how to talk like that).
Tried Star Wars Galaxies for a while, but again, it's hard to enjoy an RPG when everyone around you is screaming in l337 and figuring out how to bend the game system to level up the fastest...
Yup, that's he worst part of MP.
That's why I would like to 'go in' with several forum people, strength in numbers sort of speak.

I haven't played a whole lot of games in multiplayer, well, not in the sense of over the Internet anyway.
I once played Doom (II?) on the school network with a couple of friends. But I had hardly played it before, and they played it all the time.
Other than that, I've played some games of golf with family and friends, all just one after the other on the same computer. And I've also played quite a few games of Need for Speed II in split-screen with my sister or a friend.
And finally, I've played a few games of Monaco Grand Prix Racing 2 (lousy game, but it came with the network cards), Civ2: Test of Time and possibly Age of Kings (can't remember) with my sister over our two computer home network.
The only "multiplayer" games I've played over the Internet with people I didn't actually know are some Civ2 succession games. I also tried some multiplayer flash games once, but that was stupid, and the crowd seemed to consist mostly of "1337" 12 to 16 year old.

That's all I can remember off of the top of my head. A lot of the above list of games in the LAN categories comes from my living in a college dorm for 4 years... the rest from having LAN parties with friends in Middle School and High School for the most part.
As for all the online play... well, I like online games.
Of late, to the extent that I have time, I've been playing a lot of Neverwinter Nights. I've also been sort of watching the development of WoW, but not terribly closely. I figure I might give the game a shot, at least, when it comes out.

At LAN parties I play AoK cos it's fun yelling at eachother irl when you're invading their base and spamming 'long time, no siege' and 'nice town, I'll take it' or the good old 'RAIDING PARTY!!!'
Same goes for Worms World Party, and I also play a bit of UT2K4 (or previously UT2K3 or Q3) there because of friend of mine plays that a lot. But apart from that I never play that crap
Way back I played some duke nukem 3D with a friend of mine - modemplay, not online of course.
Online I only play SoF1. I'm running my clan MaD^ for over 4 years now and together with a few others we're the oldest still surviving clans there .
That eats up enough free time already, so I don't play any other online games regularly, but I finish lots of SP games (busy finishing Thief 2 now ).
PS: Some fun, but not well known online games are Serious Sam2 and Rune (a hack'n slash viking game). It's real fun, too bad there's not many a server left now to play on!

i've only played quake 1(nq and qw, duel, tdm, ctf, ffa, tf) extensively and that's the only game i was in a clan too. i've played a lot of multiplayer games though briefly. i've played civnet/smac on lan some along with quake/doom/hardwar/warcraft. i've also played quite a bit of console multiplayer games. my favorite console games for this are racers(mario karts, san fransico rush, etc) and of course shooters like golden eye.
i love multiplayer games but i do carry a lot of baggage with me now . i generally don't bother with rts/fps games online anymore unless i'm on a very fast connection and i have a very fast pc because you need that if you really want to have fun. those games are like 1/3 connection, 1/3 framerate, and 1/3 skill so you can see why this is important. i also do get a bit annoyed by certain mentally unstable players who seem to frequent these games. i don't mind **** talking that much but some of the people who play these games need help. i've seen some pretty nasty stuff.

I was playing Battlefield: Vietnam over my brother's house a couple of times. I'm not sure if that counts though (. As I don't have a copy of the game at home. I generally do not like shooters. I suck . I think the most I got was 9 kills in a game.
It's kind of a fun game, just not something I want to spend money on.
I play a lot of NWN online, and I used to play a lot of SMAC MP. Oh, and when I was in college we played Goldeneye... heh, I still remember the layout of the "Temple" map and where the Rocketlauncher would spawn

The only MP game I was (some years ago) better at than most people was Atomic Bomberman... Only played it once MP, which was some tournament at some LAN party... I won... it didn't feel like I had any competition... IIRC the tournament was only 3 games deep
After that day, nobody dares to fight against me in that game, but 'demands' me to play the games where I have no chance winning
No, wait... that's not true... I've played it one time more at some other LAN party (about a year later... didn't play it for that year)... but at that time I had a 'minor' problem with the game: All colors where screwed on my computer, so to be able to play the game I had to take my (wireless) keyboard and site next to another players computer, and with the lack of space on the desks I had to hold the keyboard on my legs...
