Anyone else playing the Warhammer: Dawn of War beta?


I've been trying out the tutorial for a while now, seems like a decent RTS 'though I was hoping for it to take a more tactical aproach like Total War. I just got my CD key tonight, though, so I'll start playing multiplayer tommorow... the tutorial probably isn't a very good representation.

I doubt that will ever happen, or that if it does you'll have to buy digital models or some crap, like they've done with Magic the Gathering. But if they did make a computer game that followed the rules as closely as possible and made it easily moddable - something to WH40K as NWN is to D&D - it would be awsome.

There's a copy on eDonkey, I know. But you need a CD key to play it multiplayer, and all there is aside from multiplayer is a tutorial. The copy on eDonkey is also the original beta build (current is 1.3) so it's a bit out of date, and you need a third party program to extract the files from the exe without a CD-key, because it's also neccisary for a proper installation.

I haven't actually seen all the units yet, but next time I play I'll try to make note of as many as I can for you.


But untill then, I'll describe how 'units' work. You don't build them individually like in most RTSs, but instead build a squad that consists of around 4 units. You can reinforce the squad and increase it's numbers for a small amount of resources (I think you can increase the numbers to about 10, although I didn't count), and you can also choose to upgrade units within the squad - 1 'hero' and 3 units with special weapons (such as flame flowers, rocket launchers, or heavy rifles) are allowed in each squad.

And the squad thing is what attracts me to the game, as well as it being W40K, of course

You can presumably import custom badges and banners aswell. Note that it's just a general colour scheme that you design (primary, secondary and trim colour mainly), and is applied to all your units. This is what a predator looks like under that same colour scheme.

There's really great smoke effect coming out of the exhaust on that predator by the way, but you can't tell from the screen shot. Here's a Chaos Marine
