I wasn't saying nobody *EVER* wants to play old games, it's just no biggie that you can't when it comes to console games, backwards compatabilty on a console is something that people think they'll use a lot, but when it boils down to it, it's the newer flashier games that get played.

MS have obviously done their research and come to the conclusion that however much the feature puts on the price of a console (and the number of buyers deterred by the extra cost) would not be offset by the number of extra people buying the machine because of the feature.

Any gaming luddites should just use emulators.......;O)

Remember that it's all speculation. Afaik, Microsoft hasn't confirmed that the Xbox 2 will not have a HD, nor that it will not be backwards compatible. Nothing official yet.

Just because games are newer doesn't mean they are better. The only thing you got better than even odds is eye candy.

A lot of people are still playing old games, including old PC games and ones run on emulators.

hmm well from the info we've seen here and by extrapolating(sp?) with what we know about MS and its vision for the future, i think this may not be far from the truth.

Xbox has had a go at 'online' console connection and we all know MS has a slightly sinister slant towards capturing its customers in an on going outlay of cash(wether for the newest OS or for its vision of the future where people wont own software like MS office, but will pay a subscription to use it from their servers).

So maybe this next xbox will be aimed towards that catagory, with a monthly payment for some kind of online service to hook upto a MS server to use it? This is all just guess work on my part, but as soon as i heard the xbox2 would not have a harddrive, i was wondering what direction MS wanted to take.
I'll be keeping my Xbox1 for just that reason

I'd agree with that for PC games as they generally have more depth, but generally whatever game you like on your old console there will be a better looking, better produced, better featured game of the same type out on the new console.

If there is then buy it, if there isn't save yourself the money, don't buy the new consle and just play it on your Intellivision or whatever

ah but you left out better story and better gameplay! which is 90% of a game's value to me. If all you want in a console are fighting games, sports games, and fps, then you're probably happy with new consoles, great for you. I look for a good story a fun game and yes I play final fantasy games on my ps2.

yep, I watch flims on my XBox too!

My PC is for strat games, my Xbox is for FPS's, I play *proper* RPG's on either.

Fighting games, racing games etc are for the kids.

Yeah, I only play the older finfans on the ps, as the new ones are just crap movies.

for cheapskates like me, backwards compatibility is a huge plus. It means I don't have to buy a console immediately or ever. I skiped the ps1 (no time, no money) and now I can play all those games still

I played FF7, loved it at the start, but after I played around 75% I just could n't muster up the enthusiasm, it got to be more of a chore than a game.

I like the open endedness of RPG's like Morrowind

I undertand that, It'll sell if people *think* they want it.

It doesn't mean I can't point out to some of the people in this thread who *think* they want it, that they probably won't use it?

All we know so far is there is no hard drive and xbox2 will not be backwards compatible but there has to be a reason not yet disclosed. Otherwise this is suicide, because I'm sure Sony (the one and ONLY) will have backwards compatibility with their PS3.

I agree. It's silly... especially because PS3 can say this is what WE have and XBox2 doesn't, especially if they decide to go ahead and put a hard drive in.

To disparage backwards compatibility is silly. There are many games which can be played from the previous console which, at the time, was too expensive, but now is $10-$20 and just right. It also is one of the reasons why PS2 exploded in sales right off the bat.
