It was only with a few SOTLs - I never had more than 75.....

      • Ken concedes to Cuaich at Turn 62. An interesting game, where we started very close together, giving him little chance to recovery from an early advantage I gained. A rematch is already in discussion!

Whether it was a Challenge Match or not I'm not sure. But it was fun nonetheless.

        • Hello!

So I see we have been relagated to a single CtP 1 General thread. At least we are still here! And these challenges are still alive . . . Any challenge updates?

          I'll start --

Challenge Game Number (something or other) -- TheHappies and quinns are on turn 101. TheHappies is a tough customer and is not making me "happy" at all -- let me tell you. I got the jump and captured a few of his cities early, but he has dug in hard and will not budge making me waste all my expensive horse archers and samurai against his cheap entrenched phalanxes

If anybody is interested, I have some extra time to start managing the CTP PBEM Challenge thread again. Post here if you are interested in re-energizing this CtP Challenge system once again . . .

          • Please do quinns.

I'm playing 3 games, I think only one of them is a challenge game - against TheBirdMan.

It seems to be an action replay of our previous game, where I'm ahead on the PG, but somehow he outguns me with his SOLs.

            But, we'll see...

            • I would also like to see the challengeladder active again Steve, and since so many of the oldies have left, I suggest we start the new one from scratch.

It is a challengegame I have with Rick right now. Cadeau to him, he have improved much in how to use SOTLs since last game - but I still have a sharper egde.....

Aron (TheHappies) have surely improved since our 1 vs. 1 games a year or more back. Now I'm both fighting against him and Ken in a teamgame (I'm teamed with Steve Q) and with him against Ken and Ken in another teamgame. However it could be fun to try a challengegame again in the near future.

My 4th active game is against YosemiteKen. One.... no two.... things I have learned here is: Never have your defences down. Ever-never let him come first to space. He must be killed latest at modern times........... else you loose.

              • I enjoy the challenge ladder as well. I have challenge matches going against Cuaich and Quinn and two team games that Birdman mentioned. I could probably take on one or two more games, but no more.

p.s. I got Civ III a while back and it just doesn't compare to CtP. Moving those workers around all the time really drags things out. I've still never tried Civ IV though.

And so did quinns, by starting a new thread, which is here and topped.

It's really good, especially Beyond the Sword.

I agree that Civ III is weak.

                      • I just bought Civ IV. I haven't played it yet. Did they fix that funky combat system where giant stacks attack one unit at a time? I don't think they, at Firaxis, quite understood why this was an issue. It is a fundamentally wrong method when simulating battles, whether real or abstract.

                        • No, it's still one unit at a time combat. But it has a lot of other good features to make up for that.

Maybe in Civ V (not holding my breath tho).

I recommend going straight to the Beyond the Sword expansion pack, as it is almost a different game to Civ IV, a lot better, and what all the other players are playing.

                          • Okay, thanks Rickety! I'll give it a go.

Ship of The Line. If you have enough of those ships (60 or more) then you often will be able to gun your opponent down. At least all coastalcities.

Very-very effective. Until fighters (aerodynamics) become available that is.
