    I thought tech cost was supposed to be based on how many techs you currently have.

    My tech cost for Free Drones is 279.
    University tech cost, having two additional techs, is only 273.

    I expect Drones to research slower than University due to their bonuses and penalties, and University does accumulate research points more than 3 times faster than Free Drones. BUT I did not expect Free Drones to have a higher tech cost.

    Can anybody explain this to me?

    • Tech cost doesn't actually change until a tech is discovered through research. Suppose that the University tech cost was 273 when University researched its last tech. If University acquired 2 more techs through trade or theft, its cost would still be 273 until it actually discovers a tech through research.

            • I am not sure about tech cost not changing except when you research it. As Free Drones, I have started to research 3 techs to help the team, only to have Monty end up researching them first (because of sidetracks) and giving them to me so that I can research something else. Free Drones have not developed even one single tech through their own research, and yet the tech cost for researching a tech has climbed to 279.

              Does having someone give you the tech you a researching cause an extra large jump in tech cost?

              • In the ACDG6 game, at the beginning of 2163, we were researching applied quantum mechanics (this is a SMAniaC game running on the SMAX application) and the tech cost was 843 labs.

                We traded for applied quantum mechanics and changed our research to probability mechanics. At the end of 2163, our tech cost was still 843 labs.

                Maybe there are some other events that trigger a change in the calculation of research cost. All I know is that gaining one tech or in our case two techs did not immediately cause our tech cost to rise.

                  I think I have seen it before, even many times, but I do not have any examples.

                  Let me try to recreate this.

                  Anyway, the difference between -2 research and +2 research is very large. It's no surprise for me, Univ gets all techs, Drones only switch...
