I just had an idea for an original faction strike me while I was reviewing this thread. The label on the faction selection screen: (the Gamesman)- or probably better, (the Strategist).

I was reflecting on my personal experience of foreign-born people, not a few as a student in my youth, and many of whom I’ve met through organized chess.

After the Eastern Europeans, a major demographic of immigrants I’ve met in chess are Central and South Americans, and I’ve yet to meet one who sucks over the board. There's a strong chess culture in a lot of those countries. There have been a lot of notable Cubans, especially- Capablanca was one of the greatest world champions ever, and Guevara and Castro were/are strong chess players.

So, remembering the time Captain Picard said of the Romulans “It’s always a game of chess with them”, my idea is not about the chess, but about the constant maneuvering and gamesmanship. Picture an Argentinean version of Kyong Shin (the intensity of him, I mean) with the Brian faction’s portrait background.

I hope those two appreciate what you’ve been doing all week. I knew why you started commenting for me- the whole AC forum was a ghost-town Sunday and Monday, and it was looking a little like it wasn’t just gonna be Darsnan.

I wish you commented on my work here for other reasons- I wish I was the scient of this place, with my work that universally appreciated and vociferously admired- I’m human. But your reasons don’t bother me, and I’m not looking a gift horse in the mouth.

I’m still a newb at a month, six days on the forum, and still paying my dues- I didn’t know Dale, and I’ll go where the AC-heads are- provided they throw me a little love now and again.

Just hope, y’know, there gets to be a little more love than so far- the sound of crickets chirping has been depressing, frankly.

But as long as you’re not commenting here because it will bring back Hitler or something, I’m happy enough.

Actually, I was planning to start a new thread in AC Creation to start talking about the new faction, call it the Strategist as a working title.

I'd like it to be one that is playable for humans and interesting, but at the same time one that is an interesting AI.

There are 3 components: graphics (that's you), the faction characteristics (I've been thinking about it) and the quotes (which along with the leaderheads are important in giving the faction a personality).

I'd like to see if Hydro would be interested in collaborating on the quotes. He used to write stories.

After we get a draft of the faction text, you could always post it on CFC for review by your favorite collaborator, who has a wealth of experience in making AI's competitive (although in this case we aren't modifying alphax.txt).

Give me some time to draft the opening post of the new thread. I believe the first post is an important one.

If we can get Hydro to participate, that would be a great boost. I can only find one post by Hydro on civfanatics, whereas he has been active here (we've been playing ACDG6 together).

vyeh, since you seem eager, I'm serious about letting you take point. Someone has to be in charge in case there's strong disagreement. I'm giving you the idea; if you'll follow through, it's yours.

If you haven't noticed yet, vyeh decided to jump onboard for the Strategists faction idea. I've asked him to take point, since he seems enthusiastic- and we've discussed wanting your input- but that's four AC eggs I'm juggling already.

All I'm saying is that it won't be posted, complete, in the morning.

Hmmm. You want straight-up Walter Koenig as Bester, or look for something less obvious? I wouldn't doubt that we could make it a Latino telepath who's a sharp, careful manuverer and merge it with the Strategists faction/ use the same graphic, anyway. I'm planning a rook-ish tower for their bases. That's gothic enough, isn't it?

It is not the skill in writing but the AC background. Look under Hydro in the AC Stories index.

I'm a newb who browsed the archives a lot before I joined. I have trouble taking you guys who've been active for a long time as peers. When I got my first PM from Maniac a few day ago, I kinda felt like peeing myself. (Playing SMAniaC factions got me on this faction graphic kick.)

I'm anxious to see the Strategist thread started, as we've gotten bad thread-drift going here. Recent commentary, including my own, hasn't exactly been about splinters of official factions.

I wish I got a bunch of long, adoring replies when I posted a new faction graphic, but I want to say that I especially apreciate the three people who downloaded the above in a few hours mid-afternoon of a weekday. I feel that having a look is a good form of applause.

I've got a thing starting shortly, and will, uncharcteristically, be away from the magic innerwebs box most of the day.
