I may help as I see what CIV 4 is all about and how good (or bad) I would be at modding

Correction: they have applied for the C4:AC civgroup. The member list shows people who have applied for the civgroup besides actual members. You can verify this by comparing the number of people in the list and number of members shown (currently 14).

The advertising done by inactive 'participants' can help a little, but I doubt it's more worth than keeping our rows clear of noncontributers.
I expect a person who has contributed and thus got approved to the civgroup should have more 'authority' in the local discussions by the fact alone he has the icon present in his civgroup icon list.

Says this is the non-member "encouragement" thread.

Seriously, I am very delighted to hear about this project. I loved the original SMAC, and would love to see it duplicated in the Civ4 engine. I wish you the very best of luck in trying to do this. It's certainly a "heroic" undertaking

I'm not a programmer, but when you need testers finally, I'll be around.

Sorry, no time to read through the whole thread.

My, isn't this an ambitious project
I have done modding experience (with Baldur's Gate 2), and I must say that project SO ambitious are risky.
Total Conversions raraly make it to an actual release, and in this case you're going for more than the "average" TC: I mean, EVERYTHING is changed, from rules to graphic engine, so everything should be redone from scratch (at least, I'd say so at a first glance): new graphics for cities, for units (including all the combinations!).

I'm sure the expert players here could handle a rules-wise conversion, as long as the differences between the games allow it.
But the work needed on the graphic side seems enormous to say the list...
I'm saying this *NOT* to quench the enthusiasm, but in the hope that, knowing what is to be faced, enthusiam won't degrade later due to unexpected surprises (I've seen this happen).

That said, guys, I'm impressed with the way you set up things and organized the work (being all of you smac players and efficiency gurus, this should hardly surprise me actually )
I'm really looking forward to the development of the project, and I hope I can even find the time to help someday

It is interesting that one of the first things I thought of when playing C4 was that it would be nifty to have an updated Alpha Centauri running this way as well.

At any rate, I am not positive about this, doesn't EA own the rights to Alpha Centauri. I seem to remember a great bit of consternation over that fact when I was working for EA when Alpha Centauri came out.

Same here good luck guys!! When you need testers I will be here! Out of curiosity, has any of the AC players reviewed Civ Iv now that it is out? I didn't recognize any of the names in the Civ IV review category. Thanks!

Solver is a SMAC player and MarkG has been in past (1999-2002 IIRC), don't know about Friedrich Psitalon though.
They also mention SMAC features in their reviews, which indirectly hints they have been/are SMAC players.

I dont believe FP is much of a SMAC player, but I wouldn't be surprised if he played it in the past. He would be a good knowledgeable resource if we have questions about what is or is not possible.

I admire the scale of the project . However, I must echo mart's sentiments from the original thread - IMHO it is mandatory to recognize to what extent Civ4 can be modded into SMAC. At least three lists have to be composed:
                      1. mechanisms that are identical in both games.
                      2. mechanisms that are unique to SMAC.
                      3. mechanisms that are unique to CIV.
Otherwise the entire discussion will inevitably degrade into a feature-creep-fest.

I see this issue has been recognized in the Mission Statement, but I failed to find anything concrete. Have I overlooked something?

Also, I'd like to say that when this project gets out of the "craddle stage", I will be certainly willing to contribute in code. I haven't made anything "serious" in Python yet, but I have some experience in functional languages (mostly Haskell).
Of course, in this case, advertising this project on my site is a certainty .

You haven't been able to find it? Might I suggest going to Civ4 section and clicking (P)REVIEWS.

I have a question to any of the guys(or girls) working on this. Are you guys trying to recreate SMAC or make a better SMAC?

The answer might be confusing, but we are doing both: looking to recreate SMAC so we can have something to improve.
