As requested by one of the C4:AC mod administrators , I took my daily stroll over the Creation forum of C4 and saw something that might come handy for C4:AC.

I give you the Airbase mod

I'm surprised and pleased to see a good amount of activity going on in this forum on a SMAC mod. This could make for a really compelling mod for Civ4... maybe even compelling enough for me to upgrade my computer so it will actually play it. However, I have some concerns about your hard work being shut down.

Have you received permission from the copyright holder of the original SMAC? If it is indeed EA, you can expect them to take an interest in this mod. You can expect them to request you to not use, at the very least, images, textures, copywritten text, and sounds from the original SMAC. They may even disallow you from using technology types, even basic game concepts. Whether or not they can do it legally, they can effortlessly exert pressure on Apolyton.net and dedicated modders.

I've seen corporations tear down some very promising work done by people before. You might consider measures to get permission for use, divesting the project from using any SMAC resources and concepts, or taking the center of communication on this project away from Apolyton.net. The reason for this is that, although Apolyton is the nexus for all things Civ, the administrators of the community would likely opt to shut down communication on this project rather than risk the wrath of corporate lawyers. Hosting the project elsewhere might make it easier to regroup should the hammer fall down.

Hopefully, it won't come to that sort of nonsense, but never underestimate the anality of corporate beasts. Please keep up the good work, and watch your backs!

            EA
im pretty sure they dont have the liscence.if they did, they would have released a sequel before now. if it is indeed EA as ive heard before, i would expect a shutdown as they did with the CnCG->Starcraft. however i think Firaxis games if they still exist? have it.

or taking the center of communication on this project away from Apolyton.net.
ive mentioned this,as has markg rather pointedly to me

our legal status is an unknown to me. we are planning on making ownership of smac a requirement to try and avoid legal troubles.

ive had all those concerns you mentioned already, and i shall be very dissapointed if\when we are shut down, but not surprised.

We all know the risk. Apolyton Civilization Site has agreed to take up the contact with legal side of Firaxis. Our hope is that if mod is rigged to work only with a present SMAC installation Firaxis will leave us alone, since it would actual boost the sale of the remaining SMAC and SMACX copies. If they shut us down, I hope it happens now, rather than in a late stage of project.

I checked the FAQ in the general forum-EA indeed has the rights? is there some data and\or articles on this proving it?

Well, look at manual, the game box or game CD - there is EA logo on each one. Even the main screen has EA disclaimer. Firaxis - maker, EA - publisher.

i have no link (although i will try to find one) however i got it out of PC Gamer

edit;well i cant find it on google, but ill check the magazine tomorow(its not here) and see what the site url is. i have it on unfirm say-so from multiple sites that there is\was indeed a cncg-starcraft mod at some point but i cannot find any firm references (tracks covered up? :hmmm)

the article was from about 1-2 month before i checked the site, intending to buy cncG to play it(starcraft ) but the mods site had been taken down and a notice was in its place saying EA had threatened with lawyers if they didnt stop it,and were regretfully closing shop

Command and Conquer: Generals version of Starcraft? Wouldn't such mod boost cncG sales? Interesting. Sadly, this is a possible future for this project.

 We cannot dwell on simply what amounts to possible negative outcomes for this project. We should keep marching forward, learning more about how to mod cIV, and enhancing and improving the mod as we see fit!
